Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Belf joins in Chapter 13 or around the midgame ofNew Mystery of the Emblem, with solid growths for the standard of New Mystery and decent bases for an unpromoted unit. While Belf is by no means bad for his join time, he will feel a bit underwhelming on the higher difficulty settings without an earlypromotion. Belf luckily comes at level 15, so the benefit of giving him a few more levels is much lower than reaping the benefits of an early promotion, despiteMaster Seals being a limited and heavily contested resource.
Upon promotion Belf will likely be comparable to the rest of the player's army and can make great use of his solidstrength base and growth to do heavy damage to opposing enemies. He can also make use of his C rank in lances to wieldDragonpikes andRidersbanes for no investment. Along with that, he can quickly reach B rank lances to make use of forgedSilver Lances as aPaladin orDracoknight.
Belf's main flaw is his lowspeed stat. While he generally will not be gettingdoubled by most enemies he is also not doubling the majority of enemies either which significantly lowers his potential damage output. Along with that, Belf needs to receive constantexperience for level ups or additionally stat boosting items to keep up with the high enemy quality onLunatic and Lunatic Reverse.
Overall, Belf is a solid unit that will most likely find a spot on the player's team during the midgame and with a bit of investment can be used in the lategame as well.
Personality
Belf is primarily characterized by his loyalty and dedication toCamus, even deserting the Grust army in order to escort princessNyna. Due to this he is able to quickly deduce that Sirius's true identity is Camus, though he is initially confused by his former general's decision to hide his true identity.[1] Upon Sirius explaining to him how the people of Grust finding out that Camus is still alive would result in a revolution among its citizens,[2] Belf accepts his former general's decision.[3]
Belf is also well-versed in etiquette, maintaining his image of person of fine upbringing.[4] Belf's ending inNew Mystery of the Emblem showcases his kind nature as he dedicates his life protecting the weak and traveling the continent.

- ↑"Belf: Your mask... I'd like to see the face behind it.
Sirius: ...!
Belf: I understand that you have your reasons for hiding your identity. But... Still, I'd like to ask this of you.
Sirius: ...And if I say no?
Belf: Then please tell me why. I was once a Sable Knight of Grust. I was one of the enemy then. Even so, Prince Marth has accepted me into his army. The prince looks beyond trivialities such as nationality... There should be no need to disguise yourself, I would think.
Sirius: Sir Belf, I believe you've mistaken me for another. Please leave me be.
Belf: General!" — Belf and Sirius in their first conversation,Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem - ↑"Sirius: For argument's sake, if I were in fact the Grustian general you claim I am, Sir Belf... What do you think would result from my revealing myself? A resistance would rise, and I would be their symbol. I would provide the impetus needed to free Grust. I hardly think now is the time for further Grustian blood to be spilt.
Belf: ...!" — Belf and Sirius in their second conversation,Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem - ↑"Belf: The general who led the Grustian Sable Order, which I was a member of, was a wonderful person. He used to tell us this: A knight's spear is not for himself. It exists to protect the weak. I've come thus far holding his words to my heart. But... even though I chose this path, I wonder if I made the right choice... Sir Sirius, if the general were alive, do you think he'd have anything to say to me?
Sirius: Sir Belf... I am proud to have you as my subordinate. I want you to keep protecting the people, in my stead, for I've already departed from Archanea...
Belf: ...!
Sirius: I... I would imagine he would say something along those lines.
Belf: ...Thank you... so much!" — Belf and Sirius in their third conversation,Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem - ↑"Belf: Yes, alright. By the way, was there a reason you asked me about etiquette, and not anyone else?
Kris: Oh, that's just the image I had of you... To me, you look like a person of fine upbringing.
Belf: You're an honest one... Do I really look that way?
Kris: Yeah, judging by your demeanor and table manners. That's why I thought you knew a lot about etiquette." — Belf and Kris in their second conversation,Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem - ↑"Garnering 67% of 521 votes cast, it looks like Vergil has won with an outstanding margin! To put things in perspective, Vergil collected 3 times as many votes as its nearest challenger, Belves, and twice the votes of both challenges combined. With such a landslide victory, it looks like Vergil will become the project's very first official outright name change.
