Battle in Bulgar (Japanese:ブルガルの攻防Offense and Defense of Bulgar) is Chapter 19B ofFire Emblem: The Binding Blade.

Plot

Main article:Battle in Bulgar/Script

The Etrurian Army reaches Bulgar, the largest city inSacae, currently under control of the former Etrurian High ChancellorRoartz. Instead of facing the Etrurian Army, Roartz sends out the Sacaen swordsmanKel to defend the city and retreats into his mansion to fortify.

Outside the city,Roy asksGuinivere more about her family. She explains that she andZephiel are half-siblings.Her father andZephiel's mother had been in a loveless political marriage. He truly wanted to be with his lover, Guinivere's mother, and loathed Zephiel because of this circumstance. Despite this, Zephiel strived to be the perfect son for his father's affection. Before Guinivere can explain more, the battle for the city begins.

Once Kel is defeated, Roy is approached by the dark mageNiime, who had been watching the battle alongside the Silver WolfDayan. Roy is wary of her at first, but Niime quickly offers him information on the dragons in human form he has seen. He asks the soldier accompanying him to leave and speaks with Niime in private.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

Avoid units with limited movement as they will likely fall behind the rest of your group. Your strategy should include equipping powerful weapons and dispatching two teams to the right and left flanks, or just focus on one side. Ensure each team has its own healer and bow-users specifically for the dragons.

Near the northwest and northeast villages, there are breakable walls. Using theEclipse magic on these walls ensures they will be reduced to a single hit point, and it is a guaranteed hit. Note that directly approaching through the center is not viable; the main door only unlocks on turn 12, and you cannot use items to speed it up. Instead, assault from both sides gradually or focus heavily on one side if you are capable of long-range attacks and rapid entry. This prevents a bottleneck in the center with enemies converging on you.

After breaching the walls, position your strongest units at the forefront; formidable foes await inside.

Here are some tips:

  • UtilizePure Waters to gain an edge, especially since one of theSages wields aSleep staff and another aSilence staff. Ensure you haveRestore staves on both teams or multiple units to counteract these effects.
  • Once inside, hold your position between walls. Do not rely on a single unit to vanquish all foes; the walls can be strategically used to manage enemy movements.
  • Keep an eye on enemy equipment. Some wieldAxereavers,Lancereavers,Aircalibur, orKiller Lances. Familiarize yourself with their gear to avoid unpleasant surprises.

The boss,Kel, is often considered the single hardest boss in the game. On Hard, his avoid is in the upper 80s, while he averages 27 SPD (making him impossible to double) and has enough 1-range firepower to ORKO the likes ofPerceval with double crits. Challenging him at 1-range, even withweapon triangle advantage through aKiller Lance or with powerful bosskillers likeRutger is too risky, as Kel's high crit rate can spell disaster, especially if he crits twice in a row. However, hisLight Brand deals a fixed 10 damage at range, and it can't crit. He can't kill anything with 21 HP or more at a distance as a result. Since the Light Brand also counts as light magic at range, he can be weapon triangle'd by Anima tomes, which are accurate, and a well-trained Anima mage can stall him out over time, as there are no other time-sensitive threats or objectives.

Trivia

  • This chapter's layout bears a resemblance toChapter 14 ofThracia 776.
  • Shanna and Thea have a conversation event in this chapter that can be triggered using the Talk-command when both are deployed. However, after loading the Background-image, the event ends without the characters talking. This is not just a case of the developers forgetting to set a conversation in the event, as there seem to be no fitting text strings in the games data.
