Base conversation

Base conversations are a series of dialogue scenes in theFire Emblem series present inFire Emblem: Path of Radiance,Radiant Dawn,New Mystery of the Emblem, andShadows of Valentia which are accessed between chapters.
InPath of Radiance andRadiant Dawn, the player is returned to the base when starting a chapter, where a set of base conversations can be viewed in the Info menu. These conversations serve a variety of purpose, ranging from simply helping to introduce newly-recruited characters, to giving small pieces of expository information and hints for upcoming chapters, to even rewarding the player with free items or recruiting newunits. Every conversation is marked with a number of stars which reflect its relative importance and whether it gives a reward.
A chapter's set of base conversations will be viewable at any point so long as the player remains in the base. Once the player leaves the base, any base conversations which they have not viewed yet will not be accessible in the next chapter, and will not be accessible if they return to the base from the battle preparations menu.
Base conversations inNew Mystery of the Emblem are similar to those of the previous two games, though with significantly fewer rewards. Before the player starts a chapter, they may access the Talk menu from which conversations may be viewed. Certain conversations are specific to certain chapters, those marked with two or three stars, and give advice for the coming chapter or a synopsis of its importance to the plot. Other conversations, those marked with one star, are instead viewable upon two characters reaching a specific rank, similar to thesupport system though separate from it; these conversations come in sets of three and upon finishing the third, a Bond item is obtained which serves a similar function to tonics.
Base conversations inShadows of Valentia have no mechanical benefit, serving purely to shed light on a character's backstory and personality. These conversations consist of a character talking toAlm orCelica at a village or similar location. These conversations are not ranked and it is not necessary to have seen the previous conversation to see the next one, instead advancing with story progress.

Base conversations inRadiant Dawn
After clearingRadiant Dawn once, the Replay Event option is unlocked in the Extras menu, which allows players to review any base conversations they have seen in all of their playthroughs so far. It also indicates conversations which the player has not unlocked yet and a completion percentage of viewed base conversations.

Chapter conversations
These conversations can only be viewed during thepreparations for the given chapter.[1]
Character conversations
These conversations can be viewed in any chapter once they have been unlocked. Similar toNew Mystery of the Emblem'ssupport system, units gain a point for participating in a chapter together, counted cumulatively, eventually unlocking a conversation. For example,Marth andCaeda are fielded for three chapters together and unlock a conversation at the start of the next chapter; three chapters later, a total of six chapters together, they unlock the next one; and the next conversation four chapters after that. Alternately, using aBond Drop on a unit will unlock all of that unit's conversations;Kris is the sole exception to this—using a Bond Drop will unlock all of Kris's conversations with Marth,Luke,Roderick, andRyan, and their first two conversations withKatarina, all of whom Kris has support with. All character conversations are of one-star importance.[1]
Point requirements for conversations involving characters who are recruited later tend to be lower, and many of the last few available characters have only one conversation in a pair, due to the fact that they join too late to build any more points.Lena,Nyna,Maria, andElice have no conversations, as they join after the final preparations menu. With the exception of the afformentioned four units, Kris has at least one conversation with every unit in the game.
Base conversations inEchoes: Shadows of Valentia
These conversations can be viewed by speaking to a party member in a village or similar location. They advance with the plot and have no mechanical benefit.Mycen does not have any base conversations.[2]
