Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Out of all theaxe users inShadow Dragon and the Blade of Light—Barst,Bord,Cord, andDarros—Barst is the best by a decent margin. He has a high enough weapon level to use theDevil Axe and theHammer, and with his solidstrength base and growth, he can take full advantages of those weapons to take out bosses; he also has better base stats and growths in most important stats like strength, speed, anddefense. Unfortunately, he still falls a bit short compared to the stronger units of different weapon types in the long term, particularly due to his class—Fighter has relatively lowmovement, and lacks apromotion. He is most useful in the early-game, when units that can double will struggle to deal with high-defense enemies, and beforetomes andbonus damage-dealing weapons become more prevalent.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Barst is arguably even stronger in Book 1 than in his original incarnation. The introduction of dismounting leads to 1-2 range being a much rarer trait, only given to fighters, mages and armour knights during indoor maps. This alone gives Barst more value to be deployed, as he is able to provide somewhat of a niche for these maps, as mages are too frail for attacking on enemy phase, and armour knights lack movement. Another perk towards Barst are his axe brothersBord andCord being significantly less useful due to the removal of theHammer for Bord, and Cord having a reduced HP growth. Barst is undeniably hurt by the lack of promotion that fighters have, but his solid bases and growths mean he can be an incredibly solid early to midgame unit, and if the player chooses, could potentially be used for an entire playthrough.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Barst joins the army in Chapter 2 ofShadow Dragon with good bases. Barst also has decent growths and uses one of the best weapon types in the game, axes. These aspects combined automatically make Barst a very good long-term unit. Even at base, he is capable of contributing thanks to his fairly good stats, but he is going to grow into an excellent combat unit as time progresses.

Barst's specialty in axes will allow him to use effective weaponry such as theHammer and later, thePoleaxe, both of which are excellent weapons to use for the majority of the game. However, he starts with a D rank at base, which means that his rank needs to be raised to C before he can use effective axes. Considering his decent growths and good bases, it is worth using him so that he can reach C axes, as it will allow him to one-shot enemy armor knights with the Hammer, which alone is already helpful, especially on higher difficulties. Upon promotion, it is highly advisable to reclass him to Hero since he only loses a small amount of Strength in exchange for a whopping +4 Speed, which will almost certainly cause him to start doubling.

Overall, Barst is a very useful long-term unit, and is also fairly useful from the get-go thanks to his combination of good base stats, decent growths, and weapon choice. Barst additionally faces little to no competition, as there are very few competent axe-focused units in the game, and none of them join as early as Barst.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Barst is the third Fighter to join the player's army (fourth if the player chose for Kris to become a Fighter). Compared to Bord and Cord, Barst joins a bit later, but has dramatically better bases and overall better growth rates. Bord does have a higher axe rank compared to Barst at base (C rank compared to Barst's D rank), though with sufficient investment, Barst should reach C rank soon enough and be able to use theHammer that Bord joins with. Bord, Cord, and Barst can perform atriangle attack, but this is little more than a novelty, as the opportunity cost of deploying all three fighters over other units on any given map dramatically outweighs any utility the triangle attack might provide. While Barst does outshine Bord and Cord, he is only mediocre when compared to the player's army as a whole (units like Kris andPalla will likely be far more integral to the player's army than Barst, even at his best). His bases are genuinely respectable given his join time and can become decent filler in the player's army if given proper investment (if he is invested in, Barst probably wants to re-class into a Berserker). His D rank in axes as well as his relatively low level (he starts at level 5, meaning he has a while to go before he can promote) are troublesome, but do not make him unusable by any means.
