Ward (Japanese:マジックシールドMagic Shield), also known asBarrier,Reflect, orMagic Shield, is an uncommonstaff in theFire Emblem series. In most appearances, this staff raises a unit'sresistance by seven points (five inAwakening), thus lessening the impact of magical attacks on them. However, the effect decreases by one point per turn. In this respect, Ward works similarly to aPure Water. InEchoes: Shadows of Valentia, it boosts resistance for a single turn by 20 points. InEngage, it is linked toEmblem Soren and instead grants to all allies within 2 spaces of the user the ability to counter, for half damage, any magical attack from an enemy for a single turn.
The Ward staff first appeared inFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, and it has been available in all games butGaiden,Genealogy of the Holy War,Thracia 776, andFates; it does not appear in vanillaEchoes: Shadows of Valentia, but does appear as awhite magic spell learned by theExemplaroverclass. InThracia 776, theMagic Up staff has a similar effect, boosting magic (as magic works as both magic and resistance inThracia 776).
