Baron (Japanese:バロンBaron) is an advanced armoredclass debuting inFire Emblem Gaiden. Present in only four games, it has filled two rather different gameplay roles among its appearances. In its initialGaiden appearance and again in its remake,Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, the Baron was athird-tier advanced class, promoting fromKnights, acting as the final stage in theSoldier class change line and as such being a potential final class option forVillagers. In this incarnation, it only wieldslances and acts in a largely identical manner to theGeneral, the primary class change option for Knights in future games.

The second version of the Baron is used inGenealogy of the Holy War andThracia 776 as an enemy-exclusive class. Here, the Baron is noted primarily for possessing access to almost every weapon type in the game; they can useswords, lances, axes, bows, fire magic, thunder magic, wind magic, andstaves, and the only weapons not available to them arelight anddark magic. With the exception of theGelbritter inthe final chapter ofGenealogy of the Holy War, all appearing Barons act as bosses.

In both of the class's incarnations, they have in common a very high range of stats; they possess highstrength, in addition to the highHP anddefense traditional of armored units, and are all-around competent in other stats, if lagging inskill andspeed inGaiden. InGenealogy andThracia, Barons are typically stationed in strong terrain, like castles or thrones, further increasing their formidability as bosses. However, despite their ability to wield a wide range of weapons, practically all Barons inGenealogy of the Holy War wield a single weapon or weapon type, lessening that particular potential threat; though inThracia 776, almost all Barons carry both a physical and magical weapon.
