Azura (Japanese:アクアAqua) is a princess with deep ties to bothHoshido andNohr. She was originally a Nohrian princess, but was abducted at a young age and grew up among the Hoshidan royal family. She is a talented singer whose songs are imbued with mystical powers. She is a close ally of her cousin,Corrin, and assists them on their quest no matter what destiny they choose to follow.
Azura is a secondary protagonist inFire Emblem Fates who plays a vital supporting role to the main protagonist,Corrin. The game's main theme, "Lost in Thoughts All Alone", is closely associated with her and frequently performed by her throughout the events of the game.
Biography
Origins
Azura was born inValla as the daughter of its king and his consort,Arete. When her father was killed byAnankos and Valla fell, Arete took her and, along with Azura's auntMikoto, fled Valla to the world outside theBottomless Canyon. When Arete traveled toNohr and became a wife of its KingGaron, Azura was adopted into the Nohrian royal family as a step-daughter to Garon and step-sister to his other children.
Azura spent her early years in Nohr, until Garon murderedSumeragi and abductedSumeragi's child. Hoshidan forces repeatedly attempted recover the Hoshidan child, but never succeed. Later, Azura is kidnapped by Hoshidan Ninja in retaliation. Mikoto - now Sumeragi's widow - accepts Azura as one of her own, and Azura grows up among the Hoshidan royals. Azura loses her familial connections to those in Nohr and happily remains in peaceful Hoshido.[5]
Reunion

Azura is first shown in the Prologue of Fates,Ties That Bind, singinga song at a lake, she wades underwater, entering a portal to the kingdom ofValla. The scene then cuts to another part ofCorrin's dream, the prologue.
Azura does not appear in-person untilChapter 4, where she is inHoshido, passing her time with song at the lake seen earlier. She stops at Corrin's admiring approach. She recounts to Corrin her past as aNohrian Princess kidnapped by Hoshidan forces. Azura states her life has been much better in Hoshido, despite her status as a political prisoner.
Later, Mikoto arranges for the Hoshidan royals and Azura to join Corrin in a tour ofShirasagi. During the celebration ahooded man appears and takes Corrin'sGanglari. The man uses the sword to cause an explosion, killing several bystanders as well as Mikoto. Several ghostly soldiers of unknown affiliation also appear, adding to the chaos. Corrin, distraught, transforms intoferal dragon state and proceeds to go on a rampage. Azura,Rinkah,Kaze, Sakura, and Ryoma fight off the phantom soldiers while staying out of Corrin's path.
After the fighting is over Azura attempts to quell Corrin's wrath with a song. Ryoma tries to approach Azura, but Azura uses some of her magic to block Ryoma's approach with a vortex of water. Azura's approach proves unwise, as Corrin strikes her to the ground. Corrin looms over Azura, their claws around her neck, and she only pleads that Corrin kill her of their own volition and not through that of the mad dragon within them. This gets through to Corrin's addled mind and Corrin reverts to their humanoid form, sparing Azura.
After Corrin discusses the return of their memories and being chosen byYato, Azura gives Corrin adragonstone, which will prevent Corrin from losing control of their dragon form again.

If the player decides not to side with either kingdom, then Azura will accompany them regardless, as well asJakob/Felicia. After escaping the battlefield, Azura leads Corrin andJakob/Felicia to theBottomless Canyon, and asks them to jump from the bridge, so as to access the Kingdom ofValla. There she explains that she is actually the princess of Valla, being the daughter of it's king and former QueenArete, and was forced to leave when her father was attacked and killed bythe current king and usurper. She also explains that because of a curse, she was unable to talk about this outside of Valla.
After findingGunter, the group's advance is interrupted by amysterious figure, who urges them to leave. After leaving Valla, Azura asserts that the portal to Valla from the Bottomless Canyon will close when the skies aboveHoshido andNohr change, according to a poem taught to her byher mother, and it won't open again until the skies change again in what according to her will be decades. Corrin then says that they must hurry and defeatAnankos with the help of the Hoshidan and Nohrian army, after which they head Hoshido, believing it easier to convincethem first.
Hoshido
Azura, Corrin and Jakob/Felicia head toCastle Shirasagi and make a first encounter withYukimura, who states traitors like her and Corrin have nothing to look for in there. After defeating him,Sakura (who was present at the time) insists to join the group in their quest for peace. They're later followed byHana andSubaki, who are unable to leave Sakura alone.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Azura starts as aSongstress inFates, but her joining time varies based on the route the player has chosen. She will always join the player inChapter 5 and be available for the rest of the game in theBirthright andRevelation routes. However, she will leave at the beginning ofChapter 6 and will not rejoin the player's army untilChapter 9 if the player has chosen theConquest route.
Azura joins with somewhat low bases in most areas and is very frail, but as she will rarely be seeing combat her stats are mostly irrelevant while she is in the Songstress class. Azura has low growths in HP, magic, defense and resistance, however her growths in strength, skill, speed and luck are quite high. Azura joins with the skillsHealing Descant andLuck +4, Healing Descant allows her to heal allies within two spaces up to 10% HP at the start of their turn which improves the survivability of allied units without them needing to necessarily spend a turn using a healing item or a magic user using a healing staff. Luck +4 isn't very useful aside from somewhat improving Azura'sAvoid andDodge. While in the Songstress class Azura also learns the skillsInspiring Song,Voice of Peace andForeign Princess. Inspiring Song is an incredibly valuable skill that should be gotten as soon as possible if the player wishes to keep Azura in her Songstress class as it boosts the stats of the unit that Azura refreshed. Voice of Peace offers more general defensive utility with -2 damage dealt by enemies, but it only works with physical weapons. Foreign Princess is basically worthless as it only works in theMy Castle Invasion maps, where there are only three of them in all routes, and the boost is negligible when the player can wait to complete them when they have a strong army, making the skill mostly used for online battles, and it's also hard to get without significant grinding.
As a Songstress, Azura has the ability toSing and refresh allies to give them another turn, which is invaluable in any situation. She is also a royalty unit, which allows her to useDragon Veins. As Azura is the only unit that can use the Songstress class, this makes Azura stand out as a unit with unique and useful utility due to her being the only unit able to refresh other player units. Azura can also make use of lances, but due to her E rank in lances, her low strength base, and her lance rank capping out at C, her combat is significantly weaker than other units, and her time is generally better spent singing and allowing a stronger combat unit to take another turn. Azura also has utility as apair up partner thanks to boosting speed when paired up with another unit.
Azura has the option to reclass into theSky Knight classline. This classline allows Azura to make use of her solid offensive growths to make for a decent glass cannon. She can choose between promoting into aFalcon Knight orKinshi Knight. Kinshi Knight allows Azura to use bows, while Falcon Knight gives Azura the ability to use staves, most notable of which is theRescue staff. While Azura's combat significantly improves in these classes, she also loses the ability to Sing making it unfavorable for most players as the ability to sing allows for a much wider array of strategies and uses. If she won't be kept as a combat unit, almost all of the skill access these classes give are completely unnecessary.Darting Blow andWarding Blow only work if she initiates a round of combat, and whileRally Speed seems good on paper, rallying takes away from refreshing a unit's turn.Camaraderie,Air Superiority, andAmaterasu are the only skills that work with a permanent Songstress Azura. Camaraderie gives self-healing utility, Air Superiority makes Azura a better dodge-tank against flying units, and Amaterasu gives allies some extra healing.
Azura has threeFriendship Seal options for additional classes and skills. The main two areSakura andElise, which gives the staff-wielding classes ofShrine Maiden andTroubadour respectively. Azura's decently high luck growth can makeMiracle a very useful skill to tank one deadly attack, which is extra good with her poor bulk.Renewal fromPriestess can help to heal chip damage, though Azura can't take many hits without dying. Her poor bulk also impacts how safe it is to useCountermagic since she'll be quite liable to die in one or two hits, and she won't even deal much damage back anyway. Troubadour'sResistance +2 helps with Azura's bad resistance, andDemoiselle gives a damage reduction for male characters, increasing the bulk of strong fighters likeXander.Inspiration gives extra damage and a slight damage reduction for any character regardless of gender, furthering any unit's combat prowess.Rally Luck,Rally Magic,Rally Resistance,Live to Serve, andTomefaire aren't very useful if Azura is a Songstress, since she can't use tomes or staves in that class, nor use rallies without sacrificing another unit's refresh.Corrin can pass any class to Azura, which can net many decent skills that fit a Songstress Azura playstyle.Potent Potion andQuick Salve from theApothecary tree both provide additional utility, with the former healing more from healing items, and the latter allowing Azura to continue her turn after using a healing item. TheKnight class tree offers several skills to increase Azura's bulk inDefense +2 all the time,Natural Cover when on special tiles, andPavise with a proc that can be quite consistent with Azura's ridiculously high skill growth, and Songstress's high cap.Paladin'sAegis also performs similarly, but works on different weapons. Azura's high speed growth and cap can makeWary Fighter unnecessary, but singing does gain experience much slower than combat, making this good for if the player potentially makes a positioning mistake in range of a fast enemy and she'll have to take an attack. TheOutlaw tree providesMovement +1 to bring her movement on par with most promoted infantry classes. The promotion ofAdventurer givesLucky 7 to make Azura a better dodge-tank with its +20 avoid during the first seven turns. The other skill ofPass allows Azura to refresh units that are blocked by enemy units, which is especially useful when trying to quickly complete an objective.Dark Mage'sHeartseeker also gives utility by giving surrounding units +20 hit on the enemy she is near.
Overall, Azura is an invaluable unit thanks to her early joining time and ability to refresh other player unit, which makes her stand out for her unparalleled utility in every one of theFates routes.

- ↑"Corrin: Er, hello. I'm sorry to bother you. I just got lost in your singing. There's something about that song that captivated me...
Azura: You must be Prince/Princess Corrin.
Corrin: Yes. And you are?
Azura: I am Azura. A former princess of Nohr.
Corrin: Former? I don't understand. If that were true, surely I would have heard of you. I grew up with the Nohrian royal family...
Azura: I'm afraid I've been here a long time. After you were taken by the Nohrians, the Hoshidan forces retaliated. They tried desperately to get you back, but they failed again and again. However, I wasn't as heavily guarded. Hoshidan ninja easily kidnapped me. I suppose we've both been hostages for most of our lives...
Corrin: Gods...I'm so sorry.
Azura: No, it's OK. I may technically be a hostage, but I've lived a happy life. The people of Hoshido have accepted me as one of their own. Even Queen Mikoto herself treats me as if I were her daughter.
Corrin: Does she? Hmm...
Azura: Did something happen between you and Queen Mikoto?
Corrin: No. I just...I just don't know what to do. She seems perfectly lovely, but I don't feel any connection to her. But she loves me. And so do all my blood siblings—who I've just met.
Azura: I understand. If I were to return to Nohr, I suspect I'd feel the same way.
Corrin: Do you think you could start over there? Live a new life among strangers?
Azura: No. Given a choice, I would prefer to stay here in Hoshido. Queen Mikoto is a peace-loving ruler. King Garon is not.
Corrin: ...
Azura: So, Corrin...what are you going to do?
Corrin: I don't know. For now, I'm just going to spend some time thinking." —Corrin and Azura,Fire Emblem Fates - ↑Behind the Name: Meaning, origin and history of the name Azure, www.behindthename.com,Retrieved: 19 July 2018
