TheAxe Knight orAxe Cavalier (Japanese:アクスナイトAxe Knight) is abasic mountedclass which debuted inFire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. It is one of the four weapon-specialist versions of theCavalier, specializing exclusively inaxes as its name suggests, and is a counterpart to theFree Knight/Sword Knight,Lance Knight andArch Knight/Bow Knight.
Axe Knights are statistically very similar to their counterpart base mounted classes, but owing to their exclusive axe use their performance varies in practice. They are slowed down substantially by the sheerweight of their weapons of choice, but in exchange deal significantly greater damage on average with the highermight of axes. They also tend toward having bulkier defenses than their counterparts, with somewhat higherHP anddefense. InThracia 776, Axe Knights are forced todismount to operate indoors, which forces them to wieldswords instead of their usual axes, thus reducing the burden of axe weight upon them and making them faster and more accurate fighters.
InGenealogy of the Holy War,Thracia 776, andRadiant Dawn, Axe Knightspromote to theGreat Knight class (translated asAxe Paladin inRadiant Dawn), which in the latter game in turn promotes again toGold Knight. InPath of Radiance, they instead promote toPaladin like their counterparts and have a choice of a new weapon type to wield upon promotion. InEngage, they can promote into Paladin orWolf Knight.
