Some games in theFire Emblem series feature a system which allows the player to issue generic orders to all allied units who have not moved yet. Activating one of these commands has the game's AI move the units for the player, often following one of several generic strategy patterns chosen by the player as their orders.

Fire Emblem Gaiden andEchoes: Shadows of Valentia

InGaiden, the player has two auto-battle commands, which the player can select from the menu at any time when in battle.

  • Charge* (Japanese:とつげき): All units who have not moved yet will move toward the nearest enemy, and attack them if in range.
  • Gather (Japanese:みんなあつまれ): All units who have not moved yet will move toward the party'slord character,Alm orCelica, and gather around them.

Echoes: Shadows of Valentia retains these two options, as well as adding two new ones. They are unlocked during Act 1,Zofia's Call, rather than being immediately available as inGaiden.

  • Fall Back: All units who have not moved yet will move outside of enemy range. If they are already beyond enemy range, they will stay put, unless another unit moving puts them in range of an enemy.
  • Improvise: All units who have not moved yet will do so based on each's own personality. They will do various things over others; for example,Genny prefers to heal others over attacking a unit in range.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance andRadiant Dawn

Order

Order redirects here. For the chapter inFates, seeOrders.

Both games feature theOrder command, which allows the player to select one of four generic orders for units they have not moved to complete automatically once the player chooses to end the current turn. Orders are issued through a menu command when moving the currentlord character (Ike inPath of Radiance; Ike,Micaiah,Elincia,Geoffrey,Lucia,Nephenee orTibarn, depending on the current chapter, inRadiant Dawn), and remain in effect for all subsequent turns until the player gives another Order.

  • Rally: All units who have not moved yet will move toward the party'slord character and gather around them.
  • Halt: Units who have not moved yet will make no move at all. This Order is in effect by default until the player gives a different Order.
  • Target: The player marks one space on the map as a target when selecting this Order, and once it is selected, all units who have not moved yet will move toward this target and gather around it.
  • Avoid: All units who have not moved yet will move to stay away from the enemy's attack range.

Direct

In addition to the Order command for playable units, when yellow partner units are present on the map, the player has the option of issuingDirect commands which, while still not directly controlling them, give them generalized directions on how to aid the player. These are issued the same way as menu commands when moving the current lord character, and will remain in effect until another Direct is issued.

  • Roam: Partner units will be left to act to their own devices. This is the default Direct command that is in effect unless another is selected.
  • Halt: Partner units will make no move at all.
  • Target: The player marks one space on the map as a target when selecting this Order, and once it is selected, all partner units will move toward this target and gather around it.
  • Avoid: Partner units will move to stay away from the enemy's attack range.

Fire Emblem Awakening andFates

When "Advanced Auto" is enabled in the options, (When a new game begins in casual mode, Advanced Auto is disabled), there are 4 Different orders the player can give to ALL units; includingChrom andCorrin:

  • Off: This is not an Order; rather, when you select this from the list of orders, it greys out the "Auto" option on the menu; completely disabling Auto Battle until the player activates it again by selecting one of the other 4 options
  • Guard: units will move toward and Guard Chrom's or Corrin's perimeter, attacking units that draw near.
  • Blitz: units will move toward the nearest enemy and attack within range; this is similar to the "Assault" command inGaiden
  • Stay: Units will gather and stay near Chrom or Corrin but avoid enemy range; this is similar to both "Gather" inGaiden and "Rally" inPath of Radiance andRadiant Dawn.
  • Custom: Units are individually given either a Guard, Blitz, or stay order
  • When Advance Auto is disabled, only a singleAuto-Battle command appears, which initiates Blitz, and you cannot select which command to give aside from Blitz when selected from the menu.

Auto-Battle can be cancelled while it is in progress by pressing the X Button, returning unit control to the player.

Trivia

The unused Order tutorial slide inShadow Dragon.
  • InPath of Radiance, a brief cutscene ofIke giving the selected order will play whenever an Order or Direct is issued.Radiant Dawn does not keep this, likely because of the large number of different units who can issue these commands.Echoes: Shadows of Valentia also features this, withAlm andCelica giving orders based on who's the current army leader.
  • Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon has anunused tutorial slide which suggests that aRadiant Dawn-style Order feature was planned for the game but was cut, even including a screenshot of the feature in action.
