August (Japanese:アウグストAugust) is a tactician and a former priest of the Church ofEdda. Formerly employed by theLifis Pirates along Thracia's coast, he entered the service of PrinceLeif ofLeonster and acted as his tactician throughout his campaign to liberate theMunster District fromGrannvale control.

Biography

At some point before Leif's expedition, August entered the employ ofLewyn, the errant king ofSilesse, working to orchestrate the liberation ofJugdral;[1] it was under Lewyn's orders that he sought to act as an advisor to Leif.[2] He joined up with the Lifis Pirates as part of his attempts to search for Leif, intending to abandon them once he had found him. He achieved his task during a raid on Iz led byBucks, which Leif and theFiana Freeblades repelled; once the pirates were defeated, August approached Leif and volunteered to lead him to Lifis's hideout,[3] then traveled with him to Munster. He parted ways with Leif and the Freeblades at Fort Kelbeth, intending to make his own way to Munster from there, but not before revealing his knowledge of Leif's true identity as Leonster's prince.[4]

Upon learning of Leif's capture byRaydrik, August started working on a plan to rescue him, which proved unnecessary as Leif escaped himself with the assistance of theMagi.[5] August rejoined Leif's group and helped direct his escape from Munster, recommending that Leif seek refuge from the Munster pursuit withThracia's GeneralHannibal. Upon the formation of Leif's army, comprised of Leonster army refugees, the Magi, and the Fiana Freeblades, August continued to serve as Leif's two tacticians alongsideDryas in their journey to reachTarrah and their subsequent defense of the city from theFriege army.

Following the fall of Tarrah and Leif's escape withLinoan, the army's next destination was Leonster itself, held by Friege. August's recommendation was to travel through the Millefeuille forest to get there, citing it as a safer route owing to the lax security its reputation as a dark forest ensures. Under Dryas and August's direction, Leif's army successfully traveled to Leonster and liberated it. In the aftermath of Leonster's liberation, news reached them of the plight ofUlster; both August and Dryas opposed Leif's demands to go to its aid immediately owing to a lack of manpower and the strength of the Empire,[6] but could not change Leif's mind. Noting that their soldiers were exhausted,[7] Dryas proposed to lead a smaller army first, with Leif following with the rest of the army the next day.[8] August initially volunteered to lead the first wave, but Dryas requested to do so instead on the grounds of Leif's need for August's support.[8]

Dryas's unit was overwhelmed and slaughtered by the Friege army, and August and Leif were forced to defend Leonster against a Friege onslaught, barely succeeding for six months untilSeliph's liberation army arrived fromIsaach and launched an assault on Ulster, forcing the Friege army to retreat from Leonster. Seliph defeated The Friege army at Ulster before Leif could get there, forcing KingBloom to retreat toConnacht, and at Ulster, Leif's next plan of action was determined to be the capture of Munster itself while Seliph assaulted Connacht. August directed Leif's march on Munster, the crossing of the Great River of Thracia, and the invasion of theLoptrian temple to defeatVeld. Following Veld's defeat, at Leif's request, August remained in Leif's employ as a tactician and advisor.[9]

Personality

August is a realist and pragmatist in his approach to tactics and plans. He has no interest in honor or glory, seeks to preserve the lives of Leif's army without wasting lives on frivolous public displays, and is willing to take chances on unconventional or dangerous routes if their risks mean they are less likely to be defended; his approach led him to conflict with Dryas, as his belief that the ideal route to Leonster was through the less defended Millefeuille forests contrasted with Dryas's insistence on putting on a show of a march to Leonster by taking the heavily-guarded high road.[10] To this end, he is similarly blunt and tactless in his delivery of plans, cutting straight to the point without dressing it up and harshly responding to interfering possibilities, including the emotions of others.[11] Initially, August was skeptical of Leif's chances at liberating the Munster District, remaining as his advisor solely out of Lewyn's orders; however, in time he came to be inspired by Leif's determination and hope and the subsequent victories, becoming a confident believer in Leif as a leader.[12]

August has an extensive knowledge of torture methods which he taught toLifis, according toBucks, who further theorises this to be the reason he was excommunicated from the Church of Bragi.[13] He was nonetheless disgusted by the brutality of the Lifis Pirates and worked to restrain their murderous actions as much as possible, mostly unsuccessfully.[14]

  1. "August: L-Lord Lewyn?! How... How were you able to find me so quickly, Your Highness?
Lewyn: We've been through much together, you and I. I know how you think. When I heard Tarrah had fallen, I anticipated this would be the route you'd take to escape the city. It seems I was correct. And with their defeat, Leif's army now faces a crisis of purpose... You certainly have your work cut out for you.
August: It... seems I was not up to the task. I'm sorry for disappointing you, Your Highness.
Lewyn: Oh, don't kid yourself. Tarrah's capitulation was inevitable - we both knew this. You've been doing a fine job.
August: If you say so, Your Highness...
Lewyn: Now, if there's no other matters of import, I must be going. I still have to check in on the Orgahil region before returning to Isaach. It will likely be another year before we're able to meet like this again. Until then, I leave things in your capable hands, August.
August: Another whole year... There's still so much left to be done...
" — Lewyn andAugust at the ending ofChapter 14x,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  2. "It was not by chance that our lives intersected. In fact, I only became your tactician because I was ordered to do so by my benefactor." — August toLeif at the ending ofendgame,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  3. "August: I take it you're headed to the Corsair Isles to nip this pirate threat in the bud?
Leif: Indeed. If we leave them be, it's only a matter of time until the scum attack Iz again. Besides, I hear they're also keeping a cleric captive there.
August: I see. In that case, allow me to be your navigator. I can guide you to the isles.
" — August andLeif, if the side quest conditions have been fufilled, at the ending ofChapter 2,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  4. "August: Fortune be with you, Prince of Leonster.
Leif: Hold! This whole time, you've known I was the heir to House Leonster?
August: But of course. What's more, I want to see you returned to power. Let's arrange to meet in Munster after your business is concluded.
" —Leif and August at the opening ofChapter 3,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  5. "Leif: August?! What are you doing here?
August: Planning your rescue, but it seems that was unnecessary.
" —Leif and August at the opening ofChapter 6,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  6. "Dryas: Prince Leif, we should discuss this! I share your feelings, but we simply don't have the manpower to aid Ulster! Before we do anything else, we should shore up our defenses and fortify Leonster.
August: I agree with Duke Dryas's assessment. A frontal assault against the Empire has little chance to succeed - don't engage them on their terms! Don't let yourself be lulled into a false sense of security just because you have your motherland back! Our victories thus far have been because of the Empire's own blunders - don't forget that!
" —Dryas and August at the end ofChapter 18,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  7. "Dryas: Our soldiers are exhausted. The hope of liberating Leonster was the only thing keeping them going. Just take a look around you! They sleep like the dead. But if their prince orders a march, they'll push themselves to keep going, even if it means their health. Would you put them through such a thing?" —Dryas toLeif at the end ofChapter 18,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  8. 8.08.1"Dryas: ...Very well, milord. We'll ride for Ulster. I'll take half our army now and lead a vanguard. You can lead the other half on the morrow, Prince. Are we in agreement, August?
August: Ah... Is this how...? ...... No. I should lead the vanguard. Please, Dryas.
Dryas: The prince needs you. We've had our differences, you and I, but we wouldn't be here without you. ...After this, you must devote all your skills, all your intellect, to Prince Leif's cause.
August: ...... It shall be done.
" —Dryas and August at the end ofChapter 18,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  9. "Leif: I need you, August. I'd be honored if you stayed by my side and continued to teach me.
August: Ah... As you wish it, my prince, so shall it be.
" —Leif and August at the ending ofendgame,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  10. "Dryas: Lord Leif, we must head west on this mountain path to exit onto the northern highroad."
August: Count Dryas, are you sure we want to take the coastline? I believe we should head east down the mountain and attack Leonster from the south.
Dryas: The thick forests of Millefeuille lie to the south of Leonster. Those forests are well-known for people losing their way in them.
August: I'm aware of that. But that also means that the Empire's defenses would be lax. With our small numbers, we must take full advantage of the terrain.
Dryas: I disagree. Thracia... No, this entire continent is watching over our fight. We must not only win, our victory must be one that gives courage to the people suffering from Imperial oppression. We should march in proudly from the front, flying the flag of Leonster.
August: The northern highroad is practically Leonster's front door. Legions of enemy soldiers will be defending it. We will lose many of our troops.
Dryas: I understand. But their deaths will be in glory and honor.
August: Glory? ...Count Dryas, you knights are not the only ones fighting this battle. Some of us don't appreciate having your values one-sidedly forced upon us.
    " — Dryas andAugust,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  11. "Prince! Get a hold of yourself! If we let our troops die out, Count Dryas' death will be for nothing" — August,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  12. "Frankly, at first I didn't think we would be able to liberate Northern Thracia. However, after seeing you keep trying and never giving up...I began to feel hope, and I found myself believing in you." — August,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  13. "Our boss said you're the one who taught him how to torture people. No wonder you were cast out of the order." —Bucks,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  14. "August: Bucks, watch your killing. I know you have to plunder the villages, but don't kill more than necessary.
Bucks: Ah, shut up. I don't know if you're some big-shot tactician or what, but I'm in charge here.
