- InGaiden, promotion gains consist of giving the character as many points as necessary—the "x" value shown in the table—to reach the promoted class' base stats. If the character's stats are higher than their promoted class' base stats, they will not receive any bonus; however, ifall stats are higher, then they will receive +1 to HP.
Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Atlas's late join time and low level makes him hard to be useful. Generally, the effort put into catching him up to the rest ofCelica's party yields low returns. Atlas does not fill any particular niches that are not already taken by units already in Celica's party.
At the very least, he does not need to be trained as avillager at all, as he comes above the required promotion level, and can be promoted to a more useful class right away. Of his base stats only hisHP andstrength are acceptable for his join time. His other base stats are abysmal, and his low speed growth means he gets doubled often and will be attacking less, blunting the usefulness of his decent base strength.
With promotion bonuses he can make a somewhat competentmercenary, though the player is likely to be using at least one of the four other better mercenaries available to Celica. He is the only unit that joins Celica's party by default that can become aCavalier, without theDread Fighter promotion loop, anyway. The usefulness of Cavalier is not particularly high due to the large amount of harsh terrain encountered in Celica's journey and Atlas being too slow and fragile. Atlas's spell selection is abysmal, and Celica has access to a wealth ofmages that are much better. Atlas will be outperformed byValbar as a defensiveKnight. Atlas may have some hope as an archer, as he can simply stay away from enemies and do minor damage from afar. However,Leon is very likely to be higher level than Atlas and already perform better than him, so Atlas still needs to catch up before he can even dream of equaling or outperforming Leon.
Atlas can be used to replace someone that hasdied, though he will still need to be trained significantly inskirmishes.

Atlas reprises his role as the only Villager in Celica's party.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Atlas joins Celica's party relatively late as the only Villager on her route. While this should theoretically afford him great flexibility as he has access to all male class paths without the use of aVillager's Fork, he is drastically underleveled for when he joins, even worse so thanJesse who joins only one map after him. Getting him promoted is also a hastle as the only Mila's Shrines available before defeatingGrieth require backtracking to the map of Act 2, which will result in additonal map spawns.
As a Soldier, a Cavalier, or a Mage he will struggle to contribute due to the dense terrain of Celica's maps. His speed in particular will be awful as a Soldier, and while the proposition of a Cavalier seems nice given that there are none on Celica's route untilConrad joins the movement advantage is only relevant for a handful of maps. As a Sage he will haveRescue at level 4, though it will take a very long time for him to reach it without significant grinding, and even reaching Saggitae will require some notable investment. Mercenary is on paper a very good choice as Dread Fighter is great in Act 4 and it helps with his poor speed, however there are 3-4 other Mercenaries who join in Celica's route, all of whom will have a higher level than Atlas.
Atlas's true potential is unlocked if he is promoted into theArcher line, as he is able to abuse the covetedHunter's Volley combat art of theKiller Bow. This will circumvent his issues in speed and capitalize on his excellent attack growth, so he should be able to deal stellar damage at range, even if his low skill growth will not yield him a high critical chance. However, he is still very underleveled compared toLeon, who is also faster than Atlas which makes him better on enemy phase. He also requires a Killer Bow forge of his own if he wants to use one, as while he can trade with Leon to take his Killer Bow doing so cuts into Leon's ability to kill groups of enemies on during enemy phase. Atlas can use bows besides the Killer Bow, but not having Hunter's Volley makes a significant difference for him. Atlas can catch up with Leon and become one of the best units in Celica's army, however he does require a lot of experience and Silver Marks to catch up. With more modest levels of experience he can get promote to a Sniper byDragon Shrine where he can still help out by dealing ranged damage, though he won't be an outstanding unit in that case.

Personality
When Celica encounters Atlas in the story for the first time, he is driven by revenge; he wishes to avenge his brothers, who were kidnapped by bandits some time ago. He has a single-minded obsession with that goal, but travelling with Celica gives him the chance to rescue his brothers, which he is grateful for. Afterward, he remains in her party until the end, eager to repay her for her kindness.[2]
Atlas is well-meaning but eager to get into physical scuffles, and tends to solve problems with fists and emotions. He cares about his family more than anything, but he also enjoys "scrapping" with others.[3] Atlas can be reckless and jumps to violent solutions even when they are not preferable.[4] Atlas maintains a simplistic mindset, but he is self-aware about it and wants to fight for a good cause.
Atlas is unsophisticated, and he struggles in his interactions with Celica, whom he views as refined and dignified; he admits he has no clue what to talk about whenever she is around.[5] Atlas wants a simple life above anything else—he enjoys residing in the mountain and cutting down trees.[6] While he understands that getting wealthy is beneficial to his family, he does not think it makes their lives easier, as he would be absent and could not protect them.[7]
