Athena appears as a playable character inFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon andNew Mystery of the Emblem. She also returns as a playablebonus unit inFire Emblem Awakening.

Role

Athena washes up on the shore of a village nearAurelis and is rescued by its inhabitants. A group of pirates led by Bathys attacks, kidnapping the village's children. Marth and his passing army learn of the attack and head to the village to rescue the children. They meet Athena, who joins Marth in aiding the children. Once they are safe, Athena accompanies Marth on his quest to defeatMedeus.

Analysis

Athena joins in Chapter 6x as a level 10Myrmidon with good bases but mediocre growths, particularly with very low defensive growths. Her base speed is high enough to double a few enemies even in higher difficulties and prevents her from getting doubled even by faster enemies, improving her survivability. Athena joins at promotion level, but the firstMaster Seal is not available untilChapter 10; Master Seals are competitive as well, as units likeCaeda orCavaliers gain strong bonuses from promotion, and Athena may not promote for a while due to strong competition. This is a downside, as Athena is significantly more useful when promoted.

While her base sword rank is excellent at C, allowing her to use theKilling Edge, she will suffer weapon triangle disadvantage as most enemies use lances, and she lacks access to strong effective weaponry. Once promoted, she has good reclass options;Sniper gives her a C bow rank, and she has better stats in it thanJeorge in every area but in weapon rank. Classes likeDracoknight and Sniper do not allow Athena to use her sword rank, and for that reason, it may be more beneficial to make her aPaladin; while that makes her much slower, it gives her access to lances and keeps her sword rank.

Accessing the chapter where Athena is recruited requires that the player have 15 or fewer units alive at the end of Chapter 6; this will likely require the player to purposefully allow a number of units to die, which many players may be averse to.

Analysis

Athena is aMyrmidon that joins you in her version of Prologue 4 and re-joins the army in Chapter 13x. When playing the prologue most players prefer playing Athena's version of Prologue 4 as her combat is vastly superior to that ofGordin. In the prologue she will be one of your strongest units thanks to her solid bases and great growth rates even forNew Mystery standards. However after the prologue Athena leaves and the only way to get her back is by playing through Chapter 13x, which is an optional chapter, where she will be very underleveled and unpromoted unlike to the rest of your army. Athena does join at level 10 with a B rank in swords, but even if she's early promoted her stats will be very underwhelming compared to the enemies in Lunatic. Athena can still contribute on lower difficulties, but sadly her contributions largely end after the prologue on Lunatic and Lunatic reverse.

Meet some of the Heroes entries

Athena: Borderland Sword
Here's Athena! She's a swordswoman who fought on the continent of Archanea, but I hear that she comes from somewhere else entirely.	She was found adrift in the sea near a small village, having been swept all the way to Archanea. Grateful for the villagers' aid, she fought to defend them from pirates.	It was during the battle with the pirates that she was helped by Marth, prince of Altea. Athena's code of honor demanded that she repay this debt, and so she joined his army.	Marth counted on Athena's combat prowess, and eventually, she was training members of Altea's royal guard. I guess she's still paying that favor back!
