Asbel (Japanese:アスベルAsvel) is a young mage from the Free City of Hrest in theMunster District, a member of theMagi, an apprentice to the group's leader, PrinceCed ofSilesse, and a childhood friend ofLeif.
Biography
WhenLeif came to Hrest to hide from the Empire, Asbel befriended him. During this time, the two swore an oath to retake Thracia together.[1] They later moved to the city ofTarrah. After Leif left Tarrah, Asbel went to search for him.[2] Two years later, Asbel came toMunster, where he joined theMagi.[3]
When the Magi broke into the Munster Castle dungeon during Leif's tenure there, Asbel accompaniedCed into the dungeon bowels to search for captured children. Ced tasked Asbel with finding Leif and aiding him in his escape from Munster and rebellion against theGrannvale Empire's hold on the Munster District.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
If Chapter 4x was unlocked, Asbel is the first mage to join Leif's team. He joins at level 1 with mediocre base stats, with his speed, in particular, being too low to double any enemy with more than 0 speed. 0 defense with a meager growth requires Asbel to be protected from enemies at first. He has a C-rank in wind magic, but his fire and thunder magic are both E-rank. That said, Asbel has his personal tome—Grafcalibur to help him out early on, which has lower weight than eitherFire orThunder. When he gains enough speed, which will not take too long due to his high 75% speed growth, he can use any tomes thatLifis has stolen from enemy mages, leaving Grafcalibur for the strongest opponents.
The Grafcalibur is Asbel's chief selling point. With a massive 13 might, it hits very hard. It is effective against fliers, making it a useful tool against wyvern riders and pegasus knights. 3 weight ensures Asbel can double with it after gaining some levels. The weapon is incredibly accurate with 100 hit, even against bosses on thrones. 40 crit is the cherry on top, guaranteeing a critical hit on Asbel's second attack, since he has an FCM of 3. Overall, the Grafcalibur is among the best weapons inThracia, and Asbel has exclusive access to it. While wielding the Grafcalibur, he is the player's best answer to bosses for most of the game. Most bosses inThracia stand on gates or thrones, which grant +30 avoid and +10 defense, but no magic. Physical weapons struggle to damage them with that bonus, but Asbel avoids the problem thanks to dealing magic damage. Asbel will also be very accurate thanks to Grafcalibur's 100 hit, and he is guaranteed to crit on follow-up attacks thanks to the tome's high crit. He will be the only mage in the army for a decent chunk of the game, which gives him an exclusive niche until Salem joins inchapter 12x.
Asbel has a few other cards up his sleeve. He has an action star, giving him a 5% chance to move again after completing a turn. He also hasAdept, allowing him to attack twice in a row if it activates. It triggers based on attack speed, and speed is Asbel's highest growth, so he will eventually have a decent activation rate. He makes a decent candidate forVantage due to this, as he can activate Adept or get a critical and kill an attacking enemy before they can attack, increasing his chances of survival. He is also one of only two characters, along withCed, who is realistically able to useBlizzard, a siege tome that is very useful for its ability to put enemies to sleep.
Asbel is one of the best candidates for an early promotion, as he gets massive stat gains: +5 magic, +5 skill, +6 speed, +4 defense, and +1 movement. This brings his offensive stats up to the point where he will be able to reliably one-round bosses with Grafcalibur and one-round most enemies with standard tomes. He also gains access to D staves, which allows him to heal other units if necessary.
Asbel is a great user of resources, arguablythe best user of resources among early-game units. TheCed Scroll obtained in Chapter 4x is excellent for Asbel, since it increases speed growth by 30% and magic growth by 10%. It decreases HP growth by 10%, but it is still a sensible tradeoff. With the scroll equipped, Asbel's speed growth is 105%, so he is guaranteed to level up speed. He only needs 7 speed level ups to hit 14 speed, at which point he will automatically cap it with a promotion, and generally he only needs it long enough to start reliably doubling as his speed growth is great even without the scroll. All Crusader Scrolls prevent their wielders from taking critical hits, so the scroll also improves Asbel's survivability a little. He is also a good candidate of the Hoðr Scroll and later the Dáinn Scroll to help his durability.
Asbel can also use stat boosters to improve his survivability. One aspect of Asbel that never goes away is his frailty. To mitigate this flaw, the player can have Asbel use the two availableLife Rings and aShield Ring as soon as he joins. Starting inChapter 14 many bosses will wield Master Lances and Master Axes, which hit very hard (often having over 30 attack when factoring in the bosses strength) and have a brave effect, and while most characters will struggle to survive against them Asbel appreciates them especially as he will often be tasked with killing them. He also appreciates theChapter 5Magic Ring, as his base and growth are both mediocre.

Asbel, Windswept Youth
Asbel fought alongside Leif for the entirety of the war, serving as his trusted aide and confidant. For each step Leif took down that harsh road, Asbel was always beside him, helping him shoulder the war's burdens. Afterward, he returned to his hometown of Hrest, where he became a priest, as his father was before him. In only a few short years, tales of Asbel the Sage had spread to every corner of the land.
