| “ | I will change this world for the better. Under my rule, humanity shall be free from the pain of prejudice, tyranny and oppression! | ” | — Arvis, toManfroy |
|---|
Arvis (Japanese:アルヴィスAlvis) was the Duke ofVelthomer, the son of the previous DukeVictor andCigyun ofVerdane's Spirit Forest, and was later the first and only Emperor ofGrannvale through marriage to its princessDeirdre. He inherited full FjalarHoly Blood and the ability to wieldValflame from his father, as well as minorLoptous Holy Blood from his mother; the latter made him central to the schemes ofManfroy of theLoptr Church. Arvis rose to power in a time of turmoil in both Grannvale andJugdral as a whole, and under his rule Grannvale expanded to hold tyrannical dominion over nearly the entire continent despite Arvis's best intentions; his rule was undermined by his sonJulius, the vessel of Loptous, who undermined his father's power and twisted Grannvale into a facsimile of the ancientLoptrian Empire.
Biography
Early life and rise
Arvis succeeded his father as the Duke of Velthomer at the age of 7, following his father's suicide and his mother's disappearance. Even from this young age, Arvis proved to be a strong and charismatic leader and maintained a firm hold on Velthomer's leadership; he was secretly assisted byKurth, the Grannvale prince.[1] Despite his issues coping with women, around Grann 748–749[2] he had a relationship withAida of the Velthomer army which yielded a son and full-blooded heir,Saias, who was raised in hiding.[3] By Grann 757, he had been appointed the leader of theWeissritter royal guard at the Grannvale capitalBelhalla, tasked with the care of KingAzmur during the war withIsaach. Throughout his life, he was blackmailed by Manfroy of the Loptrians into co-operating with his desires, as Manfroy threatened to reveal Arvis's Loptous heritage to the world at large.
During theVerdane invasion in Grann 757, Arvis forbade his half-brotherAzelle from going to assist in repelling the Verdane army, though Azelle departed to do so anyway.[4] Later, Arvis was dispatched by Azmur to check the situation, where he foundSigurd and a handful of soldiers fighting the Verdane army. He entrusted Sigurd with asilver sword as a gift from Azmur, before departing.[5]
In the following years, Arvis feigned support ofReptor andLombard's coup against Kurth and Byron, participating in the framing of Sigurd and Byron as the perpetrators following Lombard's assassination of Kurth, using his status with King Azmur to help perpetuate the false accusation.[6] In reality, Arvis had far more respect for Sigurd than for Reptor and Lombard, but nonetheless sacrificed Sigurd as part of Manfroy's plan for his ascent to power, taking advantage of Reptor and Lombard to accomplish this.[7]
WhenDeirdre was returned to Grannvale by Manfroy (though Arvis was not aware of this) and was recognized as the heiress to the country's throne by Azmur, she and Arvis fell in love and became engaged to each other, with Azmur's blessing. In Grann 760, in preparation for Sigurd's attempt to return to Grannvale, Arvis dispatched the Velthomer army under Aida to Phinora Castle, supporting Lombard and Reptor's forces; however, when Sigurd's army approached Velthomer itself, as per Arvis's orders Aida turned on Reptor's Friege army, assaulting it withMeteor spells in "support" of Sigurd. Following Reptor's defeat, Aida led Sigurd's army to Belhalla, claiming that Arvis was supporting him all along through hands tied by Reptor and Lombard's influence and that Arvis had arranged a formal celebration of Sigurd's return. Instead, Arvis sentenced Sigurd and his army to death for their treasonous acts, but not before showing off Deirdre as his wife to test his concerns about her past.[8] After having Deirdre escorted back to Belhalla Castle, he commenced theBattle of Belhalla, executing Sigurd's army; during this, he personally slew Sigurd using Valflame.
Emperor of Grannvale
With the deaths of Reptor, Lombard,Claud and Sigurd, Arvis became the sole surviving power in Grannvale. Following Azmur's death, he succeeded him as Grannvale's king in accordance with Azmur's wishes;Isaach andAgustria were now part of Grannvale's holdings, and the other nations of Jugdral (save forThracia) too soon fell under its rule. With the continent unified under his leadership, Arvis reorganized Grannvale into an empire with himself as its first emperor, by popular demand of the people of Grannvale.[9] At first, Arvis's reign over the empire was a decent one, albeit constrained and strict, and Jugdral experienced an era of peace.[10] During this time, Arvis and Deirdre had twin children,Julius andJulia; Julius possessed major LoptousHoly Blood, marking the success of Manfroy's schemes to breed Arvis and Deirdre to yield a viable host for Loptous.
Arvis's rule experienced a significant shift in its fortunes in Grann 770, when Manfroy presented Julius withthe Book of Loptous, instantly corrupting him with the spirit of Loptous. Julius wrested control of Grannvale from Arvis, rendering him a mostly powerless figurehead as Julius perverted the empire into a tyrannical force and granted the Loptrians positions of power across the continent.[11] Arvis attempted to resist Julius seizing hold of the empire, even once attempting to outright banish him from Grannvale, but his efforts met with failure and, it is implied, severe consequences.[12] During his reign, Arvis himself authorized thechild hunt practice despite his personal opposition to it, possibly under pressure from Julius.[13]
In Grann 777, near the end ofSeliph's liberation war, Arvis was stationed atChalphy Castle by Julius as Seliph's army fought in neighboringMiletos. While Julius was busy, Arvis travelled to Miletos Castle and attempted to orderIshtar to release the children captured there.[12] He was prevented from doing so by Julius's arrival and sent back to Chalphy.[12] At Chalphy, he released the BishopPalmarch and the imprisoned children, tasking Palmarch with fleeing with them and with givingTyrfing to Seliph.[14] He attempted to send Julia, now captured by Manfroy, along with them, but Manfroy took Julia away and tasked a unit of dark bishops with hunting Palmarch and the other children. Forced to comply with Julius and Manfroy's orders, Arvis led the Rotritter in defending Chalphy from Seliph's army, but his efforts failed and he was killed.
Legacy
Although in the war's aftermath Seliph said he understood and sympathized with Arvis's fate, no longer hating him,[15] thousands of years later,Chrom claimed that retellings of the story in the sagas maintained a negative view of Arvis, referring to him as "the villain of every Jugdrali saga I've ever heard".[16]

Personality
Despite his generally good intentions, Arvis was ruthless and ambitious, seeing his manipulation and ultimately lethal treachery toward his enemies and "allies" as necessary sacrifices to bring his dreams of a better future to fruition.[7] Although he maintained a facade of formal politeness, he tended toward having little respect for others until said respect was earned, and was initially dismissive of Sigurd's abilities as a warrior for this reason.[17] His life with Deirdre and Julia acted as humanizing influences, and ultimately his experiences of abuse at Julius's hands rendered him a broken man who futilely struggled with the twisted, sinister world his very actions had brought to life despite his attempts to do right by the world.
As a result of his upbringing amidst his father's constant philandering, Arvis developed a deep-seated misogyny and discomfort around women, having difficulty abiding their presence or trusting them; exceptions to this includedAida, a maidservant to Cigyun who becameAzelle's mother, andCigyun herself; for the rest of his life following her disappearance, he maintained a reverent trust in her and held no quarter for those who dared to question her character, even killing people for it in some extreme cases.[18] Upon ascending to the Velthomer throne, he exiled all of his father's former mistresses, save Azelle's mother, who acted as a surrogate mother to Arvis until her own death ten years later.[19] Arvis's relationship with Azelle himself was a rocky one. Though incredibly fond of Azelle,[20] his only surviving family, the two had significant trouble getting along with each other in practice, with Azelle being terrified of Arvis and believing he considered Azelle to be a disappointment.[4]

- ↑"There was a member of the Velthomer family who became the new leader, but Arvis himself had what can be called a 'gift of Kings', and held a talent and toughness/strength which was hard to believe it could come from a child, and maintained the stature as Velthomer's leader. In fact, the person who supported him from the shadows was Belhalla's Prince Kurth, but Arvis only learned this fact a long time later." —Designers' notes fromFire Emblem: Treasure, translated by Serenes Forest,Retrieved: August 11, 2013
- ↑Inferred. Saias is aged 27 inFire Emblem: Thracia 776, which is set in Grann 776, meaning he would had been born between Grann 748–749.
- ↑"If you really want to help, then listen to me. Do you remember how my daughter Aida died protecting you from Manfroy? After that, I hid you in an isolated church and withstood Manfroy's relentless threats. And years later... Your ability was recognized, and you became the court bishop of Velthomer. I was happy that Manfroy wouldn't be able to touch you in your status. However, with Lord Julius's awakening, the Loptrian power is beginning to surpass that of the Empire's. Saias...I know you're aware of the markings of Fjalar that have appeared on your body. Neither Lord Julius nor Lady Julia had them...and that's what Manfroy is afraid of. Saias, you must live. You are a Crusader of Fjalar...you must pass on the blood of Velthomer. And for now, you must hide that fact and nurture your power..." —Cohen,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
- ↑4.04.1"Sigurd: Of course! I couldn't ask for better help. But what of your brother, Lord Arvis? Is he alright with you helping out?
Azelle: No... He's been tasked with command of the Royal Guard. He made it clear that I wasn't supposed to leave Belhalla at all.
Sigurd: Did he, now? I can only imagine the scolding that you'll be in for later!
Azelle: I know this is a dreadful thing to say, but to be honest, I'm terrified of Arvis... Sometimes, when I'm around him, I... I feel as if I'm only a nuisance to him." —Azelle andSigurd intheir talk event in the prologue,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑"Sigurd: Lord Arvis?! Why are you-
Arvis: His Majesty is concerned, and he bade me to come and observe. He also entrusted me with this - a gift for you.
Sigurd: This is... a silver sword! A gift from His Majesty? Oh, what an honor! Lord Arvis, be sure to pass my deepest gratitude for this onto the king!" —Sigurd and Arvis intheir talk event in the prologue,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑"And with Arvis using His Majesty's trust, it all worked flawlessly! Convincing the king of anything is hardly a challenge, but to succeed with a tale of this scale takes quite the storyteller... And here we are, the entirety of House Chalphy framed for the crime!" —Reptor,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑7.07.1"My Loptrian heritage is that of Saint Maera, a man who fought for the rights of the people. And more importantly, I am the one true heir to the Crusader Fjalar, Loptous's sworn enemy. I will change this world for the better. Under my rule, humanity shall be free from the pain of prejudice, tyranny and oppression! What a pity it is, that Sigurd must die, but alas, all things require sacrifice." — Arvis toManfroy after Lubeck is seizedChapter 5,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑"After marrying Deirdre, he noticed that Deirdre often seemed to be another person, and was afraid that one day she would leave his side like his mother did. Gripped by this thought, he lived his days with great unease (so we can see how much he loved Deirdre...) and heard rumors that "Sigurd's wife had gone missing", leading him to carefully watch Sigurd. So during Chapter 5, he progressed with his plan (to let Deirdre meet Sigurd), which was caused by his inability to let go his endless worry. He obviously shouldn't have checked, but he was unable to control himself; that was the extent of Arvis's sorrow." —Designers' notes from aGenealogy of the Holy War playing guide, translated by Serenes Forest,Retrieved: August 11, 2013
- ↑"The final battle for control of Grannvale sent its most powerful figures to the grave. Just as he had planned, this left Arvis as the sole ruling power of the kingdom. Opposition from Silesse and Leonster was swiftly crushed, and so Arvis unified all Jugdral under Grannvale's rule. With overwhelming support from his subjects, Arvis thus became the first Emperor of the Grannvale Empire." — Opening narration ofChapter 6,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑"It's been fifteen years since Arvis conquered all of Jugdral and united it as the Grannvale Empire. Honestly, for a while at first it wasn't all that bad. In the empire's dawn, Emperor Arvis sought to bind his nation using only the strictures of law. Sure, it was strict and constraining, but we still got a good few years of peace out of it." —Lewyn,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑"A few years back, as if by magic, the Empire turned into that oppressive force we all know and love today. Even worse... the ancient heretics of the Loptr Church have arisen from the shadows once more and raised influence across the land. Their murderous rituals have return with them, and all across Jugdral they abduct children to sacrifice in droves to resurrect their fell god. All attempts to resist the Empire are crushed and met with brutal executions or enslavement. It couldn't be plainer that they seek to return Jugdral to the days of brutal control by that ancient abomination, the Loptrian Empire." —Lewyn,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑12.012.112.2"Arvis: Listen, Ishtar. Release the captive children. I know you care no more for these foul deeds than I do.
Ishtar: My apologies, sir, but I'm on Prince Julius's-
Arvis: Pay Julius's orders no mind. I'll be having a word with him soon.
Ishtar: But...
Arvis: This is an order from your emperor, Ishtar! Has Julius bent you such that you will no longer listen to the word of your liege?
Ishtar: No... Never, Your Highness...
Julius: I think not, Father. Ishtar is mine. Your selfish ways are so bothersome.
Arvis: Julius! How dare you-
Julius: Why, Father, it almost sounds as if you still don't know any better! Old age must already be dulling that once brilliant mind of yours. Why not retire before it grows still feebler? Unless... Ohoho! Don't tell me you still seriously believe that you can banish me?
Arvis: No... I know better than to try something so futile again... I... I have no further objection.
Julius: That's better. Now, then. Begone! Return to your post and haunt my sight no more. Defending Chalphy is crucial. Don't fail me for once in your sorry life, Father.
Arvis: Y-yes, Julius. At once..." — Arvis,Ishtar, andJulius after Chronos and Rados are seized inChapter 10,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑"Palman: Now, now, Lady Amalda. Just take a breath. I understand how you feel, but remember, the child hunts were instituted by Emperor Arvis himself. So sooner or later, regardless of how vocally you oppose it, all the local children will be seized and taken to Belhalla.
Amalda: But why?! Why is all this happening? I believed in Emperor Arvis, I longed to become a knight in his service... How did he go so wrong?" —Palman andAmalda,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 - ↑"Arvis: Ah, Bishop Palmarch... Your Grace, I need you to escort these children to safety.
Palmarch: Come again?! Are you setting them free?
Arvis: Indeed. More of Julius' minions from Belhalla will be here at any moment. You need to move, and quickly!
Palmarch: Y-yes, of course! Thank you, Your Majesty... Thank you so much...
Arvis: I... I also wish to entrust you with this.
Palmarch: Hold on a moment... Isn't this-" — Arvis andPalmarch after Miletos is seized inChapter 10,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑"I can't bring myself to hate Lord Arvis any longer. Knowing now he was but a sad victim of fate, I can only offer you my condolences." —Seliph,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑"That was Arvis...the villain in every Jugdrali saga I've ever heard. ...So why does he come across as so pleasant?" —Chrom,Fire Emblem Awakening
- ↑"When His Majesty asked me to observe the battle, I hardly expected to see Chalphy struggle so against simple barbarians. Sigurd... So this is all you've amounted to..." — Arvis upon his arrival theturn after Yngvi is seized, End of Evans Phase,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑"Afterwards, his beloved mother Cigyun disappeared, but because of his powerful trust in his mother he wasn't disturbed by the rumours. Arvis always held the belief that his mother would return for him. He became the ruler of the Velthomer family in his youth and his influence frightened the nobles. Often he would quarrel with them after they disrespected his mother (even though they spoke the truth) and in extreme cases, he even killed people." —Designers' notes from aGenealogy of the Holy War playing guide, translated by Serenes Forest,Retrieved: August 11, 2013,
- ↑"Arvis hated (like truly hated) his father for making mother sad for immature thoughts. When that father committed suicide, and Cigyun ran away, a cold mask always floated around the young expression. But, he thought of that mistress and Azelle as his own family. From there, the mistress was grateful for Arvis, and served him by taking care of the space around him, but she also died of disease around 10 years later. From then on, there was no sight of a woman around Arvis." —Designers' notes fromFire Emblem: Treasure, translated by Serenes Forest,Retrieved: August 11, 2013
- ↑"Sigurd: Mm, sorry about that. It sounded as if he came behind your back, but I couldn't turn him away. If at all possible, would you mind if he remained with me for a while longer?
Arvis: I see... So long as you keep him safe, then. He and I may have different mothers, but Azelle is still my only brother. I'd prefer if he remained by my side, but perhaps this is how it must be..." —Sigurd and Arvis intheir talk event in the prologue,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑Arvis - meaning of Arvis name, Think Baby Names,Retrieved: June 6, 2015
