Alright, let's go! Let us show those imperial soldiers that Archanea still has true knights!
— Midia inEpisode I

TheArchanean Knights (Japanese:アカネイア騎士団Akaneia Knights), also called theknights of Archanea,[1] is an order of knights of the namesake kingdom. A member of the order is referred to as an "Archanean knight"[2] or "knight of Archanea".[3] DameMidia was officially named its captain after theWar of Shadows upon PrincessNyna's request to remain in the order,[4] and was also shown to take on a commanding role of the Archanean Knights inEpisode I ofArchanea Saga,[5][6] which is set in the early stages of the War of Shadows.Horace,Dolph,Macellan andTomas are also members of this group[7][8]—with the latter three leaving the army after the War of Shadows.[9][10][11]

In 602 AC, during the War of Shadows,[12] the Archanean Knights fought to defend Princess Nyna fromDolhr's besiege of thepalace. They were forced to surrender however and were held as prisoners there. They were set for execution when theArchanean League approached the palace two years later,[a] but were freed and fought under the League then on. Afterwards, the League approached Lord Horace's land to confront him as he sided with Dolhr and surrendered it to them. AfterDejanira was defeated, Nyna convinced Horace to rejoin Archanea rather than be executed.

Wolf's ending inShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light states that when becoming Nyna's guard after the War of Shadows, he became an influential member of the Archanean Knights.[1][16] Later titles replaced this with him remaining inAurelis and leading theCoyote's Men.

No, that's not an option. If I were to defect now, I'd drag the entire platoon down with me. So for that reason alone, I will absolutely not take any risks that might besmirch our name.
— Jeorge inChapter 5

Thearcher-knights (Japanese:弓騎士団Archer Knights) is an Archanean group of knights consisting ofunits in theSniper class. After the War of Shadows,Jeorge was named the archer-captain,[17] and is later seen wielding theParthiaregalia.

A force of them is seen inChapter 5 ofNew Mystery of the Emblem, where Jeorge defies orders to aid the Occupation Army in battlingAltea; thus they are neutral to the player's army unless the player triggers their aggression by getting too close. Later, inChapter 8, Jeorge was stationed to guard the castle north ofChiasmir Bridge along with a small sniper-force.

The ones protecting the bridge are Astram's free company: powerful men who stop at nothing. As a wise man once said: "Let sleeping dogs lie", eh?
— A villager inChapter 7

Thefree company (Japanese:傭兵隊Mercenary Corps) is mercenary group of Archanea comprised of units generally in theHero class. After the War of Shadows,Astram was given theMercurius regalia and named the free company's captain.[18]

During the outbreak of theWar of Heroes, the free company was stationed to the south of Chiasmir Bridge, as depicted inChapter 7 ofNew Mystery of the Emblem. They would not attack the player's army should the player not approach them. Their stationary stance continues into Chapter 8—until EmperorHardin gives an order for an all-out assault on Altea's forces where they would then begin to give chase. After Altea's escape toKhadein inChapter 9, Astram followed them and acts as a reinforcement.

InMystery of the Emblem, Astram's forces consisted of snipers and heroes; meanwhileNew Mystery of the Emblem's version depicts the squad as only heroes who roughly imitate the formation the free company made in the previous two maps. Later during Altea's invasion ofAltea Castle inChapter 16, Astram led the free company inside the castle againstMarth's forces.[19]

Appearance(s)
However, as soon as Hardin became emperor, General Lorenz was banished and Lang's troops came crawling in. Lang stole everything from us. He stole our gold, of course, but he even stole our food and our loved ones...
— A villager inChapter 1

TheGrustian Occupation Army (Japanese:グルニア占領軍Grunia Occupation Army) is a military force of Archanea sent to oversee Grust after the War of Shadows concluded, which stripped GeneralLorenz his title of Grust's regent.[28] The leader of the forces was GeneralLang,[29] who was appointed by the emperor himself.[30] Members of this army includedTorus andSamuel.[31] The base of operations for the army wasArverne Castle.[29]

Archanea's occupation was deemed oppressive to the Grustians—the imperial army seized from them: profits, food, clothing, and people[32] (namely young girls who caught Lang's eye).[33][34] Grust's citizens later banded together at some point to retaliate led by General Lorenz[35][36]—but they were decimated.[36] After Altea's return to Grust fromMacedon, they quelled the Occupation Army and freed Grust from it.

Knowing that the princess was still alive, the citizens of the palace gathered a Liberation Army, and continued the fight against the Dolhr Empire. The leader of the Liberation Army, Duke Caldas, fought with the royal shield, given to him by Artemis.
— Jagen

TheLiberation Army (Japanese:解放軍Liberation Army) was the Archanean army which fought against the Dolhr Empire during theWar of Liberation. It was established by the people of Archanea's capital upon them realizing the thought to be dead PrincessArtemis was in truth alive.[37] Their leader was DukeCaldas, who wielded theFire Emblem that was previously given to him by Artemis to continue the fight against Dolhr[38]—which garnered his cause great support and then shifted the war into Archanea's favor.[39] Fighting under Caldas was General Ordwin, who won the Liberation Army many victories during the war.[40]

Miscellaneous

These are other characters who have been associated with Archanea's military but are not consigned to a specific army:

  • Count Owen: he was once a supreme commander in Archanea.[41]
  • Beck: he is a ballistician fromDeil.[42]
  • Barst: he was described to have briefly enlisted in Archanea's military after the War of Shadows, before eventually deserting his post.[43]
  • Roger: he feared Archanea's reign after the War of Shadows and fought under them to extend his own survival.[44]
  • Eibel: a commander of the army deployed outside Altea Castle during the War of Heroes.[45]
  • Willow: he guarded the throne inside Altea Castle during the War of Heroes.
  • Nehring: he guarded the outside of Archanea Palace during the War of Heroes.

Notes

  1. The Battle for Altea chapter is described to take place two years after Dolhr seized Altea.[13] Since theMarth Embarks chapter takes place in 604 AC,[14] and said besiege of Altea happened in 602 AC,[15] that would mean all maps in-between them take place during 604 AC.
