An Ill Presage (Japanese:滅びの予兆Omens of Ruin) is the twenty-second chapter inFire Emblem Awakening. This chapter sees theShepherds en route to the Dragon's Table in pursuit ofValidar in order to recover theFire Emblem. Standing in their way isAversa, commanding a group oftwelve powerful Risen.

Plot

Main article:An Ill Presage/Script

TheShepherds encounter villagers possessedly marching towards a structure identified as theDragon's Table byFrederick, who also reportsValidar having moved there. Chrom surmises that these are signs ofLucina's cataclysmic future, and the Shepherds make way for the Dragon's Table. As theYlisseans arrive, Validar ordersAversa to distract them while he finishes preparations, though to be careful that they can reclaimRobin's power. Validar taunts Chrom over the future already being set and Aversa reveals thatWalhart had intended to conquerPlegia and stop them from revivingGrima. Validar then leaves and Aversa commands theDeadlords to defeat the Shepherds.

In battle, Aversa can reveal to Chrom that Validar was her adoptive father; she can reveal to Robin thatExcellus was their puppet inValm, meant to collapse the empire from the inside should the Shepherds have failed. Upon her defeat, Aversa flees, and Chrom concludes that Validar's preparations must already be complete.

Summary

The Ylisseans go to the Dragon's Table to retrieve the Emblem, but the ritual to resurrect Grima is already underway. They break through and head for the altar.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

For a chapter this late into the game, an enemy headcount of 13 is very out of place. However, these 13 units areAversa and theDeadlords, 12 boss-level enemies. The Deadlords all wield powerful weapons; eitherregalia or B–A rank weapons, with the regalia—Balmung,Helswath,Gungnir,Yewfelle, andValflame—as well asRecover being dropped upon defeat. They also have multiple skills on higher difficulties.

As the objective is simply to defeat Aversa, all of the Deadlords can potentially be ignored. The Deadlords also do not move right away, meaning that going straight for Aversa can be a safe strategy. However, the east and west squads have "group AI"; provoking one member of the squad will provoke all four into charging. Regardless, on turn 6/4/3 (Normal/Hard/Lunatic) all twelve will charge without provocation, which can easily overwhelm the player.

To the east areMus,Draco,Canis, andPorcus. Mus is armed with aBrave Lance, allowing him to always hit twice, but lacks 2-range and resistance, making him fold against magic attacks. Draco has theYewfelle, giving him excellent accuracy andspeed, but he is vulnerable to 1-range attacks, or even anything greater than 2-range such as theLongbow. Canis has the strongesttome in the game—Valflame—but has very thinHP anddefense. She can be easily dispatched with aBeast Killer orbrave weapon. Porcus has high mobility thanks toMovement +1 andPass, but can largely be negated by a unit with highdefense.

To the west areBovis,Tigris,Anguilla, andEquus. Bovis's combination of aBrave Bow andBowbreaker on higher difficulties makes approaching him with ranged attackers somewhat unsafe. It is preferable to simply bait him out and tank his hits, then retaliate at close range on player phase. Tigris's access toCounter on higher difficulties makes him unsafe to fight at 1-range, while hisHelswath can attack both up close and at range. If the player intends to use Helswath for themself, try to avoid letting him land hits with it if possible. Anguilla can be dangerous to deal with as herThoron gives her a non-negligiblecritical rate, though she is more vulnerable to being doubled due to her lower speed. Equus possesses strong mixed bulk backed up byAegis, and can hit hard with hisGungnir boosting hisstrength. Like with Helswath, if the player wishes to use Gungnir for themself, they may want to first bait another member of his squad to avoid him attacking, then crush him with ranged weapons.

To the north areLepus,Ovis,Simia, andGallus, who are the only four that are remotely close to Aversa. Lepus is not much of a threat offensively, but her access toMiracle andRecover can make fights take longer than what may be desirable. Ovis has exceptionalmagic and wieldsRexcalibur, making him deadly to any flying unit, or anyone with poorresistance. Simia is extremely fast withBalmung boosting her speed further. On Lunatic mode, this makes her nearly impossible to follow-up against and makes her very evasive. Do not let her attack at close range. Gallus wields aWaste tome; while this makes his damage output tremendously high, Waste is still very inaccurate, so units with high avoid can be of use, though his skillsHex andAnathema make this more difficult at close range.

Regardless of whether the player chooses to fight or to avoid the Deadlords, Aversa is relatively easy to defeat, as she is an immobile flying unit with no answer tobows or wind magic. Though her highspeed results in highavoid, any decently trained bow or tome user can take her down with little effort.
