TheKingdom of Altea (pronounced /ɑlˈtiə/[key][2] or /ɑlˈteɪə/[key][3][4]; Japanese:アリティアAritia) is a small island country from the continent ofArchanea. It serves as the namesake of theAltean Union,[5] and is famed the hero and first kingAnri, his divine bladeFalchion, and itsroyal knights.[6] A national policy was adopted from Anri's dying will: that his kingdom must take initiative as theHoly Kingdom of Archanea's shield;[7] a nation Altea had sworn its fealty to for a long time[8] and was its suzerain state.[9]
For a hundred years and through five successive kings[10]—each held in high esteem by their subjects[6]—House Altea confines itself to be a force for good to protect the land when the threat of dragons rises.[11]
Geography

Altea is located around the center of the Altean Union,[5] and it occupies the middle wetlands of the continent.[12] It contains vast amounts of clear waters and rich soil—said to be beautiful.[13] Due to the former, bridges are found throughout the kingdom used to reach other pieces of land. Altea lies south ofKhadein from the mainland and is to the north ofDolhr's landmass; to its east is the bordering Kingdom ofGra and further eastMenedy, withChiasmir located to its west.
The continent's map used in the manual ofShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light displaysChapter 16 in its entirety inhabiting most of Altea;[14]Mystery of the Emblem altered this by showcasing the area instead as one singular landmass,[15] which was commonly used by future maps going forward, such as the ones used for theFire Emblem Museum website[16][17] andNintendo DS titles.[18]Mystery of the Emblem also places a scroll beneath Altea on its world map,[15] that consistently went on to be depicted instead as a piece of land after the map of Archanea from Ape's first guidebook forMystery of the Emblem established such.[19]
InShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light's version of Chapter 16, the water is identified as riverterrain, which future titles replaced with sea terrain. Those games also prominently feature grass terrain on the island housing thevendors andarmories, as opposed to it consisting of floor terrain inShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light.Shadow Dragon also portrays parts of Chapter 16's geography in thePrologue III andPrologue IV chapters: displaying zoomed in perspectives of its southwest and eastern reaches respectively.[20]
Prior to the Nintendo DS titles, Altea was not known to bear much rocky terrain, such as mountains.Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light depicted Altea Castle atop cliff terrain,[21] but future titles changed this to it being surrounded by water. InShadow Dragon, mountains are depicted in the background of the introductory Prologue and Chapter 16 CG images;[22][23] such also applies toNew Mystery of the Emblem withChapter 1 andChatper 15.[24][25] Furthermore, the secondbase conversation betweenKris andNorne makes mention of one mountain that gaps Sera from Norne's village,[26] and some of the title's new chapters depict peak and mountain terrain:Prologue 5,Prologue 6,Prologue 7, andChapter 16x.[a]
History
Prior to game events
Originally, Altea was a remote provincial city of Archanea before becoming its own kingdom.[27] The errant PrincessArtemis of Archanea took refuge there after her country's fall to theDolhr Empire during theWar of Liberation.[27] The empire eventually learned of this and sent its troops there to capture her.[27] The Altean locals fought back in risk of annihilation to protect the princess.[28] EmperorMedeus began to move after the tide of the war shifted in humanity's favor.[29] Due to histerrible power, Altea had scarce odds in continuing its resistance;[30] thusGotoh appeared before the people there and told of the means to defeat Medeus:Falchion, at theIce Dragon Temple through anarduous journey;[31] a way which Anri took on to further protect Artemis.[32]
After Anri defeated Medeus and end of the war, Anri founded the Kingdom of Altea with backing from the Holy Kingdom of Archanea[12] in A.C. 500.[33] After Anri's death, an inheritance dispute caused the kingdom to split in two: the eastern half was formed into the separate Kingdom ofGra in A.C. 537,[34] which became a close ally to Altea.[35] Anri's successor was his brotherMarcelus, from whom all subsequent Altean kings are descended.[10]
During the War of Shadows

After Medeus's revival in Dolhr, theWar of Shadows began. Altea was a prominent member of an early rendition of theArchanean League, formed with the purpose to destroy Dolhr.[36] The League lost in the Battle ofGrust and were forced to retreat, further crippled by theDragoons giving chase.[36] When thecapital of Archanea was threatened to fall to Dolhr subsequently in A.C. 602, KingCornelius personally charged his army to its rescue.[37] However, due to a confrontation with GeneralCamus atMenedy and Gra's betrayal during the Battle ofMenedy River:[37] Cornelius perished and Altea went on to be invaded byGharnef's forces and Gra.[38]
Gra managed to quickly take Altea Castle, capturing PrincessElice who stayed behind to let PrinceMarth slip away. Eventually, Marth and his surviving knights found their chance to evacuate the country. They passed a smaller division of Gra's soldiers and theirCaptain, while also avoiding a clash with Gra's main force as one of Marth's knightsdressed as him to fool them and buy the group time.Draug secured a vessel that took them to theisle of Talys:[39] where they would hideaway in the meantime.
During Marth's absence, the Dolhr-Grust allied forces came to occupy Altea and used Helena Castle as their key supply point.[40] Camus was known to have once acted as the kingdom's warden beforeMorzas succeeded him, who by contrast to Camus was ruthless and murdered any Alteans if he sensed even the slightest provocation.[41]
Two years later

Marth left Talys two years later in order to align with PrincessNyna's cause to fight Dolhr.[42] He became the leader of the new Archanean League and eventually marched the army back to his homeland in the same year.[43] Seeing the land now barren gave Marth resolve to lead his troops to liberate it.[13] After routingHollstadt and his knights, the League made their way inside the castle to stomp out Morzas and the rest of the empire within.
The people gathered around the castle once it was liberated, celebrating to many their happiest day of finally being freed from Dolhr[44]—calling Marth the "star and savior"; a title that he would come to be recognized by in Altea.[45]
The League took out the remaining Grustian presence at Helena Castle afterwards, gaining a wide array of funds for the war effort.[46]
Conclusion

Marth managed to defeat Medeus and end the war. He turned home, and with his steadfast efforts, Altea was seeing stability again.[47] The people also rejoiced upon the announcement of Marth taking on a fiancée: PrincessCaeda.[48]
During the War of Heroes
Altea received a missive from the St. Archanea's EmperorHardin in A.C. 607,[49] commanding Marth to send anexpeditionary force to the Kingdom of Grust to aid theoccupation army in a fight against a rebellion. Marth followed this and led such a division withArran.[50]
After seizing theGrust Rebel Fortress and subsequently quelling a rebellion inMacedon, Caeda urgently met with Marth atHolm Coast: finally informing him about Archanea's invasion of Altea. Hardin's missive and the rebellions were merely a means to divide Altea's military might,[51] and with aid from Gra andAurelis,[52] the besiege was successful—such caused the outbreak of theWar of Heroes.[49]

In his way back to Altea at theChiasmir Strait, Marth confronted Hardin and learned of hismysterious power that made scathing him impossible. Because of this, Marth ultimately had to withdraw away from Altea for the time being. After a considerable amount of time,[53] Marth obtained themeans to counter Hardin from Gotoh. Ready to face Archanea again, Gotoh usedWarp magic to have Marth return to Altea with his forces. Met with Archanea and Gra soldiers, Marth's army managed to reach the capital of Anri taking it from GeneralEibel. Inside the castle, Marth seized his throne from the remaining Archanean forces andWillow, securing Altea's liberation and cleansing it of Archanea's harsh occupation.[54]
Archanean Alliance
TheAltean League won the War of Heroes. Marth became the fifth king of Altea and Caeda becoming queen in A.C. 609.[55] Marth merged his country with the other Seven Kingdoms in the construction of the Archanean Alliance under his rule.[56]
Notable locations in Altea
Anri

Anri (Japanese:アンリAnri) is the capital of Altea.[1] It was seized by Dolhrian forces during the War of Shadows and Archanean forces during the War of Heroes.
Altea Castle
Altea Castle (Japanese:アリティア城Aritia Castle) is the royal residence located within the capital. It is featured more prominently in gameplay compared to the city. The castle terrain depicted during the outdoorchapter maps is identified as Altea Castle specifically,[14] which is where Hollstadt guarded during the War of Shadows, and later Eibel during the War of Heroes. The castle's interior was held by Morzas in the former conflict, and by Willow during the latter.
Eastern prison

A prison to the east of Altea,[57] which was utilized by enemy forces in the War of Shadow and War of Heroes. For the former, Gra imprisonedGordin there in A.C. 602.[58] Two years later,[59]Xane was placed within[57] as Dolhr realized his ability to shape-shift and threatened him to join their army.[60] For the latter conflict, General Eibel putEst in the prison as a means to enforceAbel's obedience to Archanea—threatening her execution if he rejoined Altea. Each instance of imprisonment acts as a side objective to rescue the relevant character in the chapters that depict the prison.
Feuding villages

Two villages in the northwest of Altea[61] that are constantly feuding with each other—presumably for a long time[62]—to the extent that they would refuse to help Marth in the midst of war should he visit one before the other.Arran andSamson resided in the opposing villages during the War of Shadows, inhabiting the western and eastern villages respectively.[61] In the War of Heroes, both villages await the arrival of Marth;[63] the western village provides him aDracoshield, while the eastern one gives aPower Ring*/Energy Drop*.
In the gameplay ofShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, the player is capable ofvisiting the othervillage afterrecruiting one of Arran or Samson. If the selectedunit hasdied prior, the player may recruit the other one.[b] If the unit is still alive, the player is met with narration describing the village's silence and the inhabitants' refusal to leave their homes;[65] this scene also uses the music track used for the playerturn instead of the one used for visiting villages. In later titles, the village not visited first is made impossible to visit for the remainder of the chapter.
InMystery of the Emblem Book II's version of Chapter 15, Marth interrupts the villager who greets him at either village after mention of the feud: expressing that the villages should make amends for everyone's sake.[63]New Mystery of the Emblem removed Marth's interference in this scene, giving more dialogue to the greeting villager who claims the village that Marth chose has more to offer him by comparison.[66]
Helena Castle

Helena Castle (Japanese:マクロニソスの城Makronisos Castle) is a fortress to the north-west of Altea which acted as key supply point for Grust and Dolhr's occupation during the War of Shadows.[40] Marth traveled there and ousted a group of holdouts led byDactyl, recruitingEtzel in the process.
Sera
Sera (Japanese:セラSera) is a small Altean village, whereMacLear raisedKris to become a knight.[67] It is located near a mountain, and across this mountain, Sera is neighbored by another village whereNorne is from.[26] Fried apples are known to be commonly consumed at Sera.[68]
Gra
- Main article:
Gra
A country to Altea's east, a steadfast ally prior to the War of Shadows. After Altea's foundation, Gra's land was deemed under it directly. It gained independence as a result of Anri's passing and the radical division amongst the nobility about inheriting Altea's throne.
