Biography
This section has been marked as astub. Please help improve the page by adding information.
1,000 years before the events ofEngage, Alear, adivine dragon, fell into a deep slumber after the defeat of theFell Dragon. They wake up after 1,000 years to find the seal on the Fell Dragon weakening, with its reawakening imminent. Alear has amnesia.[1]
Early life
As revealed throughout the events of the game, Alear was once a Fell Dragon, and one of Sombron's many children. They were forced to fight for their father in the 1,000 year war. As the war waged on, only 2 of Sombron's children were left; Alear, and their sisterVeyle. During this time, Alear gave their dragonstone to Veyle show that they would always be with her, and that they would still be alive if the stone was intact. Due to their amnesia, Alear would not recognize her nor know of their Fell heritage until revealed in chapter 20 to the main cast.
Later during the war, Alear met the Divine dragonQueen Lumera. Moved by the kindness that Sombron had never shown them, Alear changed sides to fight with her. In their battle against Sombron, they die, and Queen Lumeria takes their body back toLythos Castle . There, she prayed for a thousand years, transferring her life force into Alear, which eventually brings them back to life. The act also infused in them Divine Dragon energy (as signified by their hair changing from mono-red to half-blue-red).
Fire Emblem Engage
Role
Alear is anAvatar, as well as the main character ofEngage. They are forced to be used in every map, and theirdeath causes a game over. InChapter 11, Alear must be brought to the escape point. For the duration ofChapter 22, they are temporarily renamed toCrpt. Alear (retaining the name the player input). InChapter 24, an alternate version of Alear, called Past Alear, serves as the boss.
Starting from the end ofChapter 22, Alear can be used as anEmblem. Unlike other Emblems, Alear cannot be equipped as anEmblem Ring. Instead, by standing next to an ally with the engage meter filled and using the Engage+ command, Alear and their ally will both simultaneously enter the engaged state. A unit's bond level with Emblem Alear depends on theirsupport level.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Alear is the main character ofEngage, and their death is an automatic game over. They are the first unit in a Dragon type class the player has access to, beating the only other base game Dragon by over 20 chapters, while the other two requiredownloadable content. This gives Alear unparalleled utility as they will get many useful Type Bonuses fromEmblem skills. Due to this, they should almost always stay in their base class line to take advantage of tools such as EmblemByleth's all-statInstruct, Emblem Corrin allowing them to use all variations ofDragon Vein, or several Emblems giving more hits or damage with their Engage Attacks.
In general, past the early game, Alear will be relegated to a support role. Their good personal skill and extreme Emblem utility means they often may not have a chance to use their mediocre combat on any given turn. Their default class line gives them access to only swords and eventually arts; they do not have viable 1–2 range options untilWille Glanz is obtained at the end ofChapter 25. Alear should therefore be positioned adjacent to strong combat units whenever possible to allow their personal skill to activate, making good combat units deadlier and slightly tankier.
If the player does not mind losing the Dragon type bonuses, Alear can be reclassed to nearly any physical class and have decent combat potential. They have an innate proficiency in swords, so can obtain S rank in them inGeneral,Paladin, andGriffin Knight. Of these, Griffin Knight is the most popular choice due to flight and staff utility, and is likely Alear's best class besides their starting one.
Fire Emblem Heroes
- Main article:
Alear/Heroes
There are eight different variations of Alear available inHeroes. In addition,Veyle: Sister Dragons features female Alear as aDuo Hero alongsideVeyle.
Design
Alear's design is different depending on the form chosen by the player. In general, they have the appearance of a young person with hair and eyes that are half-red and half-blue. They wear mostly white clothes with red, yellow, and blue accents, including a white bowtie, a white long-sleeved shirt with golden markings, a black belt, suspenders attached to the lower half of their outfit with a black cross shape located on the crotch area, a long white-and-red cape with buttons attached to their shirt, a white strap underneath, and golden straps going under their arms. They also wear black diamond-shaped forearm guards with golden markings, black gloves with golden handguards attached to a blue strap, black-and-blue shinguards with golden triangular kneepads above them, and black-and-white jester-like shoes with a blue-and-yellow trim.
Alear, when they were a Fell Dragon, looked almost the exact same as their present day counterpart, but clothed in all black, and had both red hair and eyes. The blue half and all-white clothing only came when Lumera used her power to convert them into a Divine Dragon.
The male variant has short hair, with the right half blue and left half red, and vice versa for his eyes. He wears a blue-and-white vest attached to suspenders connecting his boots, puffed-up pants with gold accents, a prominent golden buckle on his belt, and part of his bowtie underneath his shirt. The female variant has long hair with a prominent braid between her bangs and back, and the blue/red placements in her hair and eyes are swapped. She wears a blue hipguard that's attached to her suspenders, a blue miniskirt, white kneesocks with blue straps attached to them, a silver diadem on her head, a white bow attached to her neck, and a blue cross strap attached to her bowtie, with the bowtie ending with golden trims.
As anEmblem, Alear's hair and eyes completely turn blue to match Lumera. This is only temporary, as the red half is restored once they revert back to normal. Their Alternate Elyos counterpart also had both blue hair and eyes, owing to the fact that this version was a full-blooded Divine Dragon.
Development

Male Alear's initial design in early concept art gives him a more complex outfit with prominent black accents, and has black and white hair likeVeyle rather than red and blue. The black accents were largely toned down, but are still visible on the boots and shoulder pads, and the outfit was simplified in the final design.

Trivia
- Alear was at some point planned to be more cowardly and have a tendency to avoid combat throughout the entire game, but the developers feared players would dislike this, and Alear's personality was largely changed to grow out of this tendency throughout the game.[5]

- ↑"Speaking of which, I remember that the protagonist, Alear, was featured in the center of the main visual of this title. I don't recall any protagonist illustrated in the center of the artwork for Fire Emblem Awakening and later titles.
Nakanishi: You're right. Recent titles in the series had key characters besides the protagonist, and the stories focused somewhat on those characters too. But we wanted our players to think of this title as a traditional heroic fantasy game. Alear, the protagonist that players control, grows as an individual guided by the Emblems and leads the way, working with allies to achieve a great goal. So, we were very keen to portray Alear in the center of the main visual.
Tei: That said, we had many twists and turns with Nintendo regarding the characterization of Alear... (Laughs)
Twists and turns?
Tei: Yes. When a protagonist is a royal, they are often associated with bravery, or thought to have a sense of mission to fight against fate and challenges, and I believe those are the traits that people generally associate with heroes. However, I thought such heroes are unlikely to resonate with people today. Let's say someone tells you one day, out of nowhere, that your mission is to save the world. My guess is that your response wouldn't be like, “OK! I'll do my best...” So, at the early stage of development, we had many moments where Alear fears the enemies and says unheroic things.
That sounds interesting – showing a relatable protagonist.
Tei: Well... we overdid it, and Nintendo pointed it out to us. (Laughs)
Nakanishi: We were worried that players would give up on the protagonist before they could get emotionally attached to them. (Laughs)
You thought Alear was being too vulnerable?
Nakanishi: Yes... (Laughs)
Tei: So, we decided to keep a good balance. We kept Alear’s fragile side in the beginning but showed them gradually growing braver. The protagonist – in other words the actual player of the game – embarking on a journey is a classic storyline of a Fire Emblem title, but we knew we wanted to create a story that matches the modern world and made some adjustments." —Ask the Developer Vol. 8, Fire Emblem Engage—Part 1, ,Published: January 17, 2023,Retrieved: January 5, 2025
