History
Origins
The Adrestian Empire was founded in Imperial Year 1 byWilhelm Paul Hresvelg with the support of SaintSeiros.[3] In Imperial Year 32, Emperor Wilhelm I raised an army to unite Fódlan under the Adrestian banner and oppose the King of Liberation,Nemesis, in the War of Heroes;[4] the Empire emerged victorious in 91 with the death of Nemesis at Seiros's hands, and brought a formal end to the War of Heroes in 98 with the passing of Wilhelm's son, Emperor Lycaon I.[5]
Fragmentation of the Empire
In 721, the seabound nation ofDagda invaded Adrestia with support from theBrigid Archipelago. The Empire counter-invaded Brigid in 728, conquered it, and made it into a vassal state. Adrestia moved on to Dagda in 731, but was repelled.[6] In 747,Loog led the northern half of Adrestia in rebellion in the War of the Eagle and Lion.[7] Loog emerged victorious, and, with the support of theChurch of Seiros, founded the Holy Kingdom ofFaerghus in 751.[8] The easternLeicester region of Adrestia later revolted in 801, and Faerghus occupied and annexed it;[9] 80 years later, Leicester would launch its own movement for independence, leading to the foundation of the Leicester Alliance in 901.[10] In 961, Adrestia supported Leicester in repelling an invasion from the eastern nation ofAlmyra; this led to the international effort to construct Fódlan's Locket in 1101 to defend Fódlan's eastern border.[11]

Insurrection of the Seven
During his reign, EmperorIonius IX attempted to consolidate his power.[12] House Hrym responded by revolting and attempting to defect to the Alliance with the aid of House Ordelia, in what came to be known as the "Hrym Rebellion".[13] The Empire successfully suppressed the rebellion, but in 1171, six great noble families – Houses Bergliez, Hevring, Varley, Vestra, Gerth, and Aegir – alongside House Hrym launched a soft coup known as the "Insurrection of the Seven" and reduced Ionius IX to a figurehead.[14]
By this point, a cult known as "those who slither in the dark" had infiltrated the Empire. They abducted Imperial children to use for experiments in order to implant someone with the Crest of Flames so they could wield theSword of the Creator; Ionius IX's ninth child,Edelgard, was the sole survivor and successful test subject.[15]
Three Houses
Late in 1180, Edelgard secretly traveled to Enbarr and convinced the aging and infirm Ionius IX to abdicate, and assumed the role of Emperor from that point onward. Blaming the Church of Seiros for propagating the over-valuation of Crests, Edelgard declared war on the Church and won the opening conflict in the Battle of Garreg Mach.
On non-Crimson Flower routes, whereByleth either taught the Blue Lions or Golden Deer, or taught the Black Eagles and sided with the Church, by 1185 the Empire had conquered western Faerghus and driven princeDimitri into exile. Byleth's reawakening decisively tipped the war against the Empire. After retakingGarreg Mach Monastery to use as a base of operations, Byleth and their allies launched a campaign against Adrestia by taking the Great Bridge of Myrddin on the Imperial–Alliance border. After a three-way battle between Adrestia, Faerghus, and Leicester, Byleth seized Fort Merceus, then beseiged Enbarr, where Edelgard was killed in the battle, and the Adrestian Empire ended with her death; its territories were annexed by either the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus (on Azure Moon) or the nascent United Kingdom of Fódlan (on Verdant Wind and Silver Snow).
On the Crimson Flower route, where Byleth chose to teach the Black Eagles and sided with Edelgard, the Empire was in a stalemate for five years with Faerghus and the Church, while Leicester remained nominally neutral. In 1185, Byleth awoke from a coma and led the Empire in battle against Leicester, defeating and annexing it within two months. In 1186, Edelgard and Byleth launched their invasion of Faerghus, killng Dimitri at the Tailtean Plains, and killingRhea in the following seige of Fhirdiad, uniting Fódlan under Adrestia.
Warriors: Three Hopes
Shortly afterShez joins the Officer's Academy, Edelgard approaches Rhea and asks her to dispatch theKnights of Seiros to capture her uncle,Lord Arundel, whom sheaccuses of being a collaborator ofthose who slither in the dark. During her assault on Enbarr,Duke Aegir is captured andMarquis Vestra is killed, while Lord Arundel manages to escape. Following these events as well as a succession crisis in the Kingdom and an attempted invasion of the Alliance by theAlmyrans, Rhea closes the officer's academy. Two years later, Edelgard declares war on the Church of Seiros, quickly capturesGarreg Mach Monastery, and orders an invasion of the Kingdom and the Alliance.
If Shez joined the Black Eagles, they are appointed as a commander of the Imperial army. Adrestia eventually forces the Leicester Alliance into allying with them and invading the Kingdom. Shez is forced to return to the Empire due to an attack by those who slither in the dark and a coup by the former Duke Aegir at Fort Merceus. The Imperial army defeats the former Duke Aegir and returns to the Kingdom front for a large battle between the Empire–Alliance and the Kingdom–Church armies; depending on Shez's prior actions, the Leicester Alliance may turn on the Empire in this battle, though the Empire emerges victorious either way. The army then moves on Garreg Mach Monastery, which has come under attack by both the Knights of Seiros and those who slither in the dark, ultimately managing to kill both Thales and Rhea. If the Alliance maintained the pact with the Empire, they prepare to march north and finish off the Kingdom; if the Alliance betrayed the Empire, the three nations go back to warring with no end in sight.
If Shez joined the Blue Lions, they assist Rhea and the Central Church in escaping to the Kingdom before beginning to defend it against Adrestia. The Adrestian invasion eventually leads to a major confrontation inArianrhod, where Edelgard is defeated and captured by Thales. Thales frees the former Duke Aegir and makes him the new regent of the Empire; the Kingdom and the Alliance ally and launch a counterinvasion of the Adrestian Empire. Alongside the Alliance, they eventually face the Imperial army inAilell and chase Edelgard and Duke Aegir to the monastery. On the way to the monastery, Duke Aegir is killed, but Edelgard manages to escape. The Kingdom army attacks Garreg Mach Monastery, kills Thales, and finds Edelgard in a weakened state. After recapturing the monastery, they continue their march on the Empire.
If Shez joined the Golden Deer, they assist the Alliance army in defending against the Adrestian invasion.Count Gloucester feigns defection to the Empire to lure the Empire's troops into a trap. The Alliance begins a brief counterinvasion before making a pact with the Empire. The newly founded Leicester Federation assists the Empire in its invasion of Faerghus from there. After killing Rhea at the Tailtean Plains, the Federation sues for peace, although the Empire and Kingdom's responses are uncertain.
Politics
Power in the Empire is distributed among six noble families, each holding a ministerial office.[16] Around Imperial Year 1167, Emperor Ionius IX attempted to focus his power at the expense of the noble houses,[17] leading to theInsurrection of the Seven. As a result,Duke Aegir, the Empire's prime minister, was left as the Empire's de facto ruler, while Ionius IX was rendered powerless. In addition to the seven major noble houses, several smaller noble houses exist within the Empire, most of which have their own territories but lack significant political power.
Noble houses of Adrestia
Power in the Empire is split among several noble families. Houses Aegir, Vestra, Bergliez, Hevring, Varley, and Gerth are the major noble houses, while several minor houses with significantly less political power exist.[18][19]

Locations of Adrestia
Enbarr
Enbarr (pronounced /ˈɛnbɑɹ/[key]; Japanese:アンヴァルEnbarr) is the capital of the Adrestian Empire. It has existed even before the founding of the Empire, dating back about 1,400 years before the events ofThree Houses.[20] 41 years before the Empire was founded, SaintSeiros appeared in Enbarr and performed several miracles,[21] and it is said that a major canal that would prove vital to the city's development was constructed under her guidance.[22] Because of this, Enbarr is considered a holy place by theChurch of Seiros.[23] When the Adrestian Empire was founded, emperorWilhelm I chose Enbarr as its capital due to its significance to the Seiros faith.[24]
At the time ofThree Houses, Enbarr serves as the residence of the Hresvelg family and the location of the Imperial palace. It is the largest and most populous city in all of Fódlan. It is one of the few ports in Fódlan,[25] and considered one of the Empire's finest cities for academics.[26] The renowned Mittelfrank Opera Company resides in Enbarr. Enbarr also served as the residence of theSouthern Church until it lost its influence about 100 years prior to the games' events.[27]
InThree Houses, Enbarr serves as the location of two major battles on the Silver Snow, Azure Moon, and Verdant Wind routes. On all three routes, the city's streets serve as the location for the final confrontation withHubert and – on the Silver Snow and Verdant Wind routes – theDeath Knight. The following mission sees the relevant army storm the Imperial palace and defeatEdelgard. The city also serves as the location for theDLC paralogueBlack Market Scheme.
InWarriors: Three Hopes, the city is only visited on the Scarlet Blaze route, where the Imperial palace serves as the location for two major battles: During the prologue, it is stormed by a group lead by Edelgard with the help of the Knights of Seiros in an attempt to captureDuke Aegir andLord Arundel. It is later revisited duringScarlet Blaze Chapter 9 when Edelgard decides to return to the capital, where the Church of Seiros attempts to assassinate her.
Gronder Field

Gronder Field (pronounced /ˈgɹɑndɚ/[key]; Japanese:グロンダーズ平原Gronder plains) is a big field that is located in the Empire. The majority of the field is located in Bergliez territory, with a smaller part being part of Varley territory. During theWar of Heroes, it was the site of a major battle between the Empire's forces andNemesis's supporters.[28] In the time ofThree Houses, it is a major source of food for the Empire and greater Fódlan.[29][30] Additionally, it is the site of the annual Battle of the Eagle and Lion at theOfficer's Academy.
InThree Houses, it is visited inChapter 7 for a recreation of the Battle of the Eagle and Lion during Part I of all routes. It is also visited during Part II of the Azure Moon and Verdant Wind routes, where it is the site of a major battle between the Empire, the Kingdom, and the Alliance. On the Azure Moon route, Edelgard and Claude are injured during the battle and forced to retreat, while on the Verdant Wind route, the battle ends with Edelgard injured and Dimitri killed. On the Silver Snow route, the same battle occurs withoutByleth's army, and during the battle, Edelgard is forced to retreat while Dimitri dies in battle and Claude vanishes.
InWarriors: Three Hopes, Gronder Field is the location of a battle between the Leicester Alliance andCount Bergliez's forces duringChapter 7 of the Golden Wildfire route. When the Alliance invades the Empire, Count Bergliez decides to intercept them on the part of the field that was once used for the Battle of the Eagle and Lion, as it has already been trampled beyond use.[31] The battle ends in a draw when the Alliance army is forced to retreat due to an Almyran attack onFódlan's Locket.

It was originally constructed to defend Enbarr.[32] It has a reputation for being impregnable.[33]
InThree Houses, Fort Merceus serves as a key location on all non-Crimson Flower routes. On the Silver Snow and Vedant Wind routes, it is visited after the battle at Gronder Field. TheDeath Knight acts as the fortress's commander. Due to its reputation of being impregnable, Byleth and their army invade it by disguising themselves as imperial soldiers.[34] After capturing the fort, it is destroyed by an attack withjavelins of light bythose who slither in the dark. On the Azure Moon route, the fort is visited after both the Kingdom and the Alliance have been liberated and united under the Kingdom's control. The Kingdom army destroys the main gate and enters the fortress.[35] At the end of the battle, the Death Knight is killed by the Kingdom army.
InWarriors: Three Hopes, Fort Merceus is visited duringChapter 13 of the Scarlet Blaze route after it has been captured by theformer Duke Aegir with the help of those who slither in the dark.
