Herbert Livingston Satterlee was born on October 31, 1863 in New York City, the son of George Bowen Satterlee and Sarah Bradley Wilcox Satterlee. He was educated in New York and graduated from Columbia College in 1885. He completed his legal studies at Columbia Law School and was admitted to the New York bar in 1888, establishing himself in private practice in the city.
In 1900 he married Louise Pierpont Morgan, daughter of financier John Pierpont Morgan and Frances Louise Tracy Morgan. Through this marriage he became closely associated with one of the most prominent families in American finance while maintaining an independent professional identity as an attorney and public servant. In 1910 he and his wife purchased Sotterley Plantation in Hollywood, Maryland, which became a family residence and working estate.
During the Spanish American War he served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy in the Coast Signal Service. His experience in military service preceded later federal appointments. Under President Theodore Roosevelt he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy, serving during a period of naval expansion and administrative reform. In that office he participated in oversight of naval affairs and administrative policy.
On April 18, 1920, while attending services at St. George's Episcopal Church in Manhattan, Satterlee narrowly escaped death when an assailant fired a revolver inside the church. The intended target was Dr. Markoe, but one of the bullets passed near Satterlee. The incident drew national attention and underscored both his public prominence and his regular presence in civic and religious institutions in New York.
Satterlee continued his legal career and corporate involvement in subsequent decades. He served on boards and maintained his standing within New York's legal and financial circles. He and Louise Morgan Satterlee were the parents of two daughters, Mabel Morgan Satterlee, later Ingalls, born in 1901, and Eleanor Morgan Satterlee, later Gibbs, born in 1905.
His wife died on October 6, 1946. Less than a year later, on July 14, 1947, Herbert Livingston Satterlee died at his apartment at 1 Beekman Place in Manhattan from a self inflicted gunshot wound. He was eighty three years old. Funeral services were held at St. George's Episcopal Church, and he was buried at Trinity Church Cemetery and Mausoleum in Hamilton Heights, New York City.
