Gordon Auchincloss, lawyer and former secretary to his father-in-law, the late Colonel Edward M. House, adviser of President Woodrow Wilson, died yesterday in the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center after an illness of several months. His age was 56.

Mr. Auchincloss was a member of the law firm of Auchincloss, Alley & Duncan of 50 Broadway. He served as secretary of the American War Mission to England and France in November, 1917, and as secretary to Colonel House during negotiations of the Armistice in November, 1918, and during the Peace Conference in Paris in 1919.

Born in New York, he was the son of Edgar Stirling and Maria LaGrange Sloan Auchincloss, and a grandson of Samuel Sloan, president of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad and of the Hudson River Railroad, predecessor of the New York Central System.

Prepared at Groton

Graduated from Groton School in 1904, he received an A. B. degree from Yale University in 1908 and an LL. B. degree from Harvard Law School in 1911. He began practice in New Tork and served as assistant United States attorney for the Southern District, New York, from 1913 to 1915, and as special assistant to the Attorney General of the United States in charge of certain tax litigation from 1915 to 1917.

He was assistant treasurer of the Democratic National Committee in 1916. In May, 1917, he was appointed an assistant to the counselor of the State Department and later accompanied Colonel House to Europe.

Mr. Auchincloss was a director of the Chase National Bank, International Paper and Power Company, the Crosse & Blackwell Company. societe Financiere de Transports et d'Enterprises Industrielles of Brussels, Belgium; Solvay American Corporation and Compania Hispano Americana de Electicidad of Barcelona, Spain.

Had Acted as Receiver

He had been trustee and receiver in many large financial reorganizations and bankruptcies. He was receiver for Zimmerman & Forshay, bankers and brokers, in 1923, for the Hodgman Rubber Company in 1924 and for the Eastern Insull units in 1932, trustee in the American bankruptcy proceedings for the Kreuger & Toll Company in 1932 and for the Porto-Rican-American Tobacco Company in 1940, later becoming president of the reorganized company, the Rican Corporation.

Mr. Auchincloss was chairman of the fund raising committee of the New York Association for the Blind and a trustee of the Riverside Church. He was a member of the State and city bar associations, Psi Upsilon and Scroll and Key of Yale. His clubs included the Links and Broad Street of New York and Piping Rock of Locust Valley, L.I. Mr. Auchincloss resided in Locust Valley and had a town house at 950 Park Avenue.

He leaves a widow, the former Janet House; a son, Edward House Auchincloss; a daughter, Mrs. Louise Robbins of Washington, D.C., and four brothers, Representative James C. Auchincloss of Rumson, N.J. and Charles, Reginald and Dr. Hugh Auchincloss, all of New York.
