Charles was born Beekmanville, Dutchess Co., NY, Aug. 13, 1832. He was apparently a ward of his grandfather after his father died in 1844. Then guardianship forms were filed for Charles and his sister Elizabeth in 1845; the new guardian was apparently his maternal grandfather Reid Crandall, though their relationship later deteriorated (See 1854).

1850 - overland in the gold rush with brother James R., arriving San Francisco June 5. He is age 18 in Eldorado Co., CA, census, with James. James returned to Dutchess 1853, Charles stayed. He was also in Yuba Co.

ca 1853 - by 1853 he owned several gold claims near North San Juan on the Yuba River in Nevada County. He was elected Deputy Sheriff and later studied law.

1854 - Charles wrote James asking him to return to Calif. with his bride. He says ".. but now dark discord has jarred my feelings until now of love for home remains except for you and your wife... what a vacancy there is in my heart and is that dear love so fondly cherished for father (i.e. gr-f Crandall) unreturned show this letter to father tell him I love him with an undying love although he has inflicted upon me the most severe wound that it has ever been my part to bear...".

1857 - he was admitted to the Bar in 1857 and was later elected to State Assembly from Yuba County, serving two terms.

1862 - md. Calif. Apr. 10, Elida Field Vineyard b. Madison, Wisc. 1844, dau. of James Vineyard, Los Angeles state senator who died Aug 1863.

1863 - to Virginia City, Storey Co., NV.

1868 - resident of Virginia City, Nev., a Nev. delegate to the Republican convention in Chicago. He visited Dutchess Co. in July, his first and perhaps only visit back home. He left NYC July 20 to return to Nevada via Panama and San Francisco.

1869 - On Apr. 15, he was notified of his appointment by Pres. Grant as Minister to Japan. He left S.F. Oct. 4 on the P.M.S.S. China, arriving Yokahama Oct 30. He served until 1873, also representing the king of Hawaii as his diplomatic agent. Elida was the first American woman presented to the mikado.

1873 - to Oakland, Alameda Co., CA.

1874 - his will Feb 14 names wife and first three children. He also arrived this year in Virginia City, Storey Co., NV.

1876 - he d. Virginia City, Oct 26. A Virginia City obit indicates there was a Masonic funeral, with burial in Marysville, Calif. His will filed Marysville, also in Dutchess Co., NY.
