Pharr, Henry Newton: Planter, Engineer and Manufacturer. Born New Iberia, La. July 19, 1872, son of Capt. John N. and Henrietta Clara (Andrus) Pharr, and a direct descendant of Walter Pharr, a native of Scotland, who came to America in 1865, settling in Mecklinburg Co. N. C.
Educated at Centenary College, La., B. A.; Vanderbilt Univ., Tenn, B. E. Is an extensive purchaser of sugar cane from the small growers of his parish. Being a practical mechanical engineer, he gives his personal supervision to the details of his factory work, as well as to the general management of the agricultural part of the business.
Is a Republican and was one of the legislative candidates for St. Mary Parish, being nominated by the Republican, Democratic and Independent fusionists.
In 1904, he was unanimously nominated candidate of the third Congressional Dist. of La. Polled the largest vote of any Republican candidate in the state. Director of State Nat'l Bank of New Iberia and of the Iberia, St. Martin's and Northern Railroad. Member Am. Soc. of Mechanical Engineers. Is prominent in church and temperance circles, being a member of the official board of the Methodist Church in New Iberia.
Vice-pres. of the firm of J. N. Pharr & Sons. Dir. of the La. Sugar Co.; also the Kenilworth Sugar Co., 1909-10; Pres. of the La. Sunday School Ass'n for 1909; Vice-pres. International Sunday School Ass'n for state of La., 1910; Pres. of the Louisiana Rio Grande Sugar Co., Ltd., which owns 8,500 acres in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas. Member, Am. Civil Alliance. Married 1898 to Anna, daughter of Courtland Smith, of West Feliciana Parish, La.; one son and one daughter. Address: Olivier, La. U.S.A.
