Politician. He is recognized as an American diplomat and politician. He is best known for having dealt with the Soviet Union the definition of the agreement Salt II during the 70s. Graduated at the University of Chicago, Bartholomew was appointed Member of the Commission for International Affairs at the same University from 1960 to 1962. From 1960 to 1968, he was also professor of Social Sciences and Governmental at some American universities. He began his career at the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Defense Department, serving from 1963 to 1974. During these years, he held numerous other prestigious positions, including Deputy Director at Bureau of Political Military Affairs and Member of the U.S. National Security Council from 1977 to 1979 and Assistant Secretary of State for Political and Military Affairs from 1979 to 1981. From 1983 to 1997, he served in the diplomatic service as ambassador in Lebanon, Spain and Italy during the administrations of Presidents Reagan, George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. From 1989 until 1992, Bartholomew was also a Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs. He died after a long battle against the cancer.
