United States Senator. He was a United States Senator, Presidential Press Secretary, author, and journalist. As a prominent Democratic Party figure in the 1960s, he served as press secretary to PresidentsJohn F. Kennedy andLyndon Johnson from 1961 to 1964. In 1964 he was appointed to the US Senate seat from California that was left vacant by the death of Senator Clair Engle. He served from August 4, 1964, to December 31, 1964. He was defeated in the election of 1964. He then worked as a news reporter for ABC News from 1977 to 1997. Born in a Roman Catholic/Jewish household, his mother was a French-born journalist, and his father was a New York City-born engineer. Before World War II, he attended college and worked on the "San Francisco Chronicle" editorial staff before enlisting in the U.S. Navy as an officer. After the war, he returned to the newspaper and college, graduating from the University of San Francisco in 1947. He worked on the unsuccessful presidential campaign of Adlai Stevenson, taught at a college, and worked at "Collier's" magazine. In 1959, he entered the world of politics, working for John F. Kennedy, who was then a senator. He authored books about Kennedy: "A Tribute to John F. Kennedy" in 1964, "With Kennedy" in 1966, and "John F. Kennedy, Commander in Chief: A Profile in Leadership" in 1997. Salinger also coedited "An Honorable Profession: A Tribute toRobert F. Kennedy" in 1968. Besides these books, he authored at least seven other books on various political subjects. He became a trustee for the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation. He retired to France, dying there, but his remains were repatriated and buried in Arlington Cemetery.
