S.--Born, Powhattan, Ohio, June 24, 1855; son of B. and Sarah (Powell) Bergundthal; educated in common schools and high school; married Lenora Neely; bookkeeper 3 years for a wholesale house; 5 years on the farm after his father died; bookkeeper, machine and bolt works, Indianapolis, Ind., 3 years; to Topeka, Nov. 1884, and was clerk for Jonathan Thomas 16 years; in 1900 commenced real estate business and has been in it since then; councilman, 1901-02; mayor of Topeka since April 1903. Office: 117 W. 7th.

W.S. Bergundthal Had Lived Here for Forty Years

Widely Known Lumberman Had Been Ill Five Weeks


W.S. Bergundthal, 70, former Topeka mayor and part owner of the J. Thomas Lumber company, died this afternoon at 1:10 o'clock at his home. Mr. Bergundthal, a Topekan for more than forty years, had been ill for the last five weeks.

Mr. Bergundthal was born in Powhattan, Ohio, June 24, 1855. He was educated in the common schools of the county and married Miss Leonora Neely. Mrs. Bergundthal died six yeara ago.

After his marriage, Mr. Bergundthal was a bookkeeper and was for five years manager of a farm, following the death of his father. Still later in Indianapolis, he was a bookkeeper for a machine works.

In the Lumber Business
The former Topeka mayor moved to this city in November, 1884. He was for sixteen years a clerk for the late Jonathan Thomas, founder of the J. Thomas Lumber company. In 1900 he entered the real estate business but later, together with D.J. Hathaway, bought the major interest in the Thomas Lumber company, where he remained active until his illness.

Mr. Bergundthal was councilman from 1901 to 1902 under the council-mayor form of city government , and from 1903 to 1905 was mayor. His home was at 711 West Sixth avenue.

Surviving Mr. Bergundthal are his daughter, Wilma, and a son, David, both of Topeka.

Funeral arrangements have not been made.

Last Rites for W.S. Bergundthal Will Be Held at Home

Funeral services for W.S. Bergundthal, former mayor of Topeka and part owner of the J. Thomas Lumber company, who died Saturday, will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from his home, 711 West Sixth avenue.

Active pall bearers will be: J. Blood, F. Blood, Andy James, Joe Catron, F.C. Melvor, N.W. Mull; honorary pall bearers: J.B. Beck, Tom Martin, Paul Huycke, W.C. Glen, J.B. Whelan, Earl Leech, Dean Smith, Robert Pierce, Sr., Dave Gabriel and George Nyman.

Services at the home will be in charge of the Rev. B.A. Rogers, student pastor of Kansas State Agricultural college, and Knights Templar, at the grave, in charge of Golden Rule lodge No. 90, A.F. and A.M. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery.
