Charles Henry Truax was born in Durhamville, Oneida County, New York, on October 31, 1846, the son of Henry Philip Truax. He was educated in the schools of his region and attended Vernon Academy and Oneida Seminary before entering Hamilton College, where he graduated with the Class of 1867. After leaving college he moved to New York City, studied law, and was admitted to the bar, establishing the foundation for a long judicial career in a rapidly growing city.
In his early years he taught school and served as a principal while continuing his legal studies. His judicial career began in 1881 when he was appointed to the New York City Superior Court, where he served until 1894. That same year he was elected a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention, participating in the revision of the state's fundamental law. In 1897 he became a Justice of the New York Supreme Court for the First Judicial District, the principal trial bench for Manhattan. He remained on the bench until 1909 and was recognized at the time of his death as having spent nearly three decades in judicial service, issuing many noted opinions during a transformative period in New York's legal history.
Truax took an active part in civic and social life. In 1896 he served as president of the Holland Society of New York, an organization devoted to preserving the history of the early Dutch and Walloon settlers of New Netherland. He was associated with the Manhattan Club and other New York institutions, reflecting the prominence he held in the legal and cultural circles of his era. He also developed an interest in art and decorative objects, and items from his collection appeared in the accessions of major museums, showing his ties to the city's artistic community as well as its legal one.
He married twice. His first marriage, in 1871, was to Nancy Chamberlain Stone, with whom he had two children, Elizabeth and a son, Charles Henry Jr., who died in infancy in 1886. Nancy Truax died that same year. In 1896 he married Caroline H. Sanders, an early graduate of the Woman's Law Class at New York University and one of the first women admitted to the New York bar. Their daughter, Carol, was born in 1899 and later became known for her work in the arts and in publishing.
Charles Henry Truax died in Manhattan on January 14, 1910 at the age of sixty three. He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.
