SMITH, Mrs. CLARA HIGGINS
Mrs. Clara Alzina Hapgood Higgins Smith, widow of Frank Sullivan Smith, one time head of the Shawmut Railroad and a sister of the late Governor Frank W. Higgins, died at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New
York City, March 15, 1934. She was born in Rushford, September 6, 1854, the daughter of Orrin Thrall
Higgins. Her brother was Frank Wayland Higgins, Governor of New York from 1904 to 1906. Her
philanthropic interests resulted in the donation of the main building of the Olean General Hospital,
formerly The Higgins Memorial Hospital, and the Angelica Free Library. She was a frequent visitor at
her summer home here, known as the Sunnycroft, in former years when Mr. Smith headed the railroad. A nephew, F. Harrison Higgins of New York is the only immediate survivor. Funeral services were
privately conducted in New York and the body brought to this village for burial in the Smith
Mausoleum.
