Sarah A. Schaeffer, age 87, of Clare, passed away on May 22, 1998, at her home.
She was born on Jan. 27, 1911, in Pittsburg, PA, the daughter of John A. and Carrie D. (Kleeman) Bauer. She married Harold Schaeffer on April 20, 1930, in Clare, and he preceded her in death in 1988.
Mrs. Schaeffer and her husband had owned and operated Schaeffer's Dairy Bar in Clare until their retirement. She was a member of the Clare County and National Republican Committees, and had served as a delegate to the National Republican Convention in 1952 and 1956. She was active in both St. John and Prince of Peace Lutheran Churches and maintained membership at Prince of Peace in Clare. Mrs. Schaeffer was a charter Clare Rotarianne and Paul Harris Fellow.
Surviving are three children: William and Betty Schaeffer of Farwell, Ken and Bonnie Schaeffer of Mt. Pleasant, and Janet Lucy-Voss and Husband Robert Voss of Ann Arbor and Xionia, WI; one brother, William and Nema Bauer of Clare; one brother-in-law, Lowell and Sybill Schaeffer of Sioux City, IA; three sisters-in-law: Maudie Bauer of Clare, Viola VanVorst of Traverse City, and Dorothy Dillon of Clare; eight grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 12 step-great grandchildren.. She was predeceased by two brothers, John and Courtney, and two great-grandchildren, Ryan McKibben and Alyssa Psychas.
Funeral services were held on May 26 from the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, with burial in Cherry Grove Cemetery at Clare. Arrangements were by Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home, Inc. of Clare. (The Clare Sentinel, p. 7 – Clare, MI – 26 May 1998)
