Obituary: Los Angeles Herald November 30, 1920
Best known prohibition worker in the country and twice nominee of the party for President, died at his home in Long Beach early today as a result of complications caused by burns that he received in an accident 10 days ago. He was 68 years of age. Although having suffered fro paralysis for some time, Mr. Chafin's condition had not been considered serious until following an accident at his home, 414 Elm Avenue, when he was badly burned by a blast from a gas heater. He was lighting the heater when the accident occurred and would probably have been burned to death had not a neighbor come to his rescue.
Born in Wisconsin: Mr. Chafin's early education was in that state and later attended the law school of the University of Wisconsin from which he graduated. Some time after this he became an attorney for a Chicago railroad and is understood that while engaged her first became interested in prohibition work. Still later in life he was made superintendent of the
Washington Home for Inebriates, with which he was connected for some time until coming to Tucson. AZ., to live. The family came to Long Beach about four years ago, the change of climate being made especially for Mr. Chafin's benefit since he was in ill health at the time. Tour Australia: Since coming to Long Beach, Mr. Chafin and his daughter have made trips to Australia, in the interest of prohibition work. They returned from the last tour of the Antipodes a short time ago after having been absent for a period of eight months. Mr. Chafin was a prominent honorary member of the W.C.T.U. and was also a member of the Phantom Club of Wisconsin. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Carrie Chafin, who was with him at the time of his death, and a daughter, Desdemona Hoffman. The body will be taken to his birthplace in Wisconsin for burial.
