Journalist, diplomat, and newspaper publisher. Born in Cedarville, Ohio, on October 27, 1837, he graduated from Miami University in 1856 and began his career in journalism shortly thereafter. During the American Civil War, he served as a war correspondent forThe Cincinnati Gazette, reporting from the front lines and earning national attention for his detailed coverage of military campaigns. Following the war, he joinedThe New York Tribune, where his abilities as a writer and editor brought him into close association with its founder, Horace Greeley. Reid became managing editor and, after Greeley's death, succeeded him as publisher and editor-in-chief. Under his direction, theTribune remained one of the most influential newspapers in the United States, known for its independent editorial voice and emphasis on national reform. Active in Republican politics, he served as the United States Minister to France from 1889 to 1892 and was the Republican candidate for Vice President in 1892 on the ticket with Benjamin Harrison. Later, he was appointed United States Ambassador to the Court of St. James's, serving in London from 1905 until his death in 1912. His diplomatic career strengthened American–British relations during a period of growing international cooperation. He died in London on December 15, 1912, at the age of seventy-five and was buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Sleepy Hollow, New York.
