U.S. Presidential Candidate, Mitt Romney and his father,George W. Romney are among his cousins.
His father, Miles Romney, Sr., purchased The Western News, a newspaper published in Stevensville, in 1893 and moved its operations to Hamilton. His family also operated a ranch west of Hamilton. Miles Romney, Jr., attended Hamilton High School, U.S. Military Academy, George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and the University of Montana, from which he graduated in 1922 with a degree in journalism. He worked two years as a purser on a freighter in the Pacific Ocean. In 1925, Romney took over management of The Western News from his father; he continued in that position until 1929. In 1931 he moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked as clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives Public Lands Committee. Romney returned to Montana in 1933 and worked until 1936 as deputy collector for the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. Also, he served a tenure as Montana Legislative Council's subcommittee on the Railroad Commission.
In 1936 he became editor of The Progressive, and in 1937 became publisher and editor of The Western News, a position he held until his death. Romney was elected to the Montana House of Representatives in 1966 and 1968. In 1971 he was elected as a delegate to the Montana Constitutional Convention. Romney was appointed to complete the term of Montana State Senator William A. Groff of Victor in 1973, and was elected in 1974 to a full term in the Senate, where he served as chairman of the Committee on Committees and the Local Government Commission, and as a member of the Finance and Claims Commission. Romney was a active member of the Democratic Party for much of his life. Miles Romney died on 19 Feb. 1976, while still in office.
