Governor of South Dakota, US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served as the state of South Dakota's governor from 1979 until 1987 and from 1995 until 2003. His father (who served to prosecute Nazi war criminals) died while William was a child and he would be reared in South Dakota, from where his mother was a native of. High school had always been a place where he lacked discipline and as a result, he joined the US Marine Corps. He attained his law degree from the University of South Dakota and practiced privately, prior to being elected State Attorney General of South Dakota (1975 to 1979). During his governorship, Janklow prioritized reducing property taxes, made access to immunization treatments more readily available for children and advocated the usage of technology in schools. In 2002 he was elected to the US House of Representatives, serving South Dakota's At-large Congressional District, but resigned in January 2004 following a tragic event which took place in August 2003, when he struck and killed a motorcyclist after going through a stop sign. Janklow was later convicted of second-degree manslaughter and served 100 days in prison. He died of complications from a brain tumor.
