During the First World War, he supported relief work and led the American Red Cross mission to Russia in 1917. The experience shaped his philanthropy in plant science. He established the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research, established in 1920 and dedicated in 1924 in Yonkers, New York, which later became affiliated with Cornell University. In Arizona, he created the Boyce Thompson Arboretum at Superior, organized in 1924 and opened to the public in 1929.
