Actress. A native of Redding Ridge, Connecticut, she was born Hope Elise Ross Lange. A talented actress from an early age of stage, film, and television. She is best remembered for her roles as 'Emma' in "Bus Stop" (1956), 'Selena Cross' in "Peyton Place" (1957), (which earned her an Oscar nomination), as 'Carolyn Muir' for the television series, "The Ghost & Mrs Muir" from 1968 to 1970, and "The New Dick Van Dyke Show" from 1971 to 1974. Her other films include: "The Young Lions" (1958), "The Best of Everything" (1959), "Wild in the Country" (1961), "Pocketful of Miracles" (1961), "Love Is a Ball" (1963), "Jigsaw" (1968), "Death Wish" (1974), "The Prodigal" (1983), "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge" (1985), "Blue Velvet" (1986), "Clear and Present Danger" (1994), "Just Cause" (1995), and "Before He Wakes" (1998). She also appeared in several television series including: "The Fugitive," "Medical Story," "The Love Boat," "Matt Houston," "Hotel," "Murder, She Wrote," and "Fantasy Island." She passed away in Santa Monica, California at the age of 70.
