U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Yale College in 1811, studied law at Litchfield Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1811, and proceeded to practice law in New York City. During the War of 1812, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army. After the war, he continued to practice law, was a member of the board of aldermen of New York City in 1834, and served as a New York City Councilman in 1836. He also was a member of the New York State Senate (1837 to 1840) and served as New York City Recorder (1841 to 1846). In 1847, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress, serving until 1849. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he again was New York City Recorder (1848 to 1851), superintendent of the Metropolitan Police (1857 to 1862), and clerk of the New York Court of Appeals (1862 to 1865). Returning to his home state, he practiced law until his death.
