U.S. Senator. He graduated from Clarksburg College in 1891, graduated from Central College in 1894, then taught at Central College, Missouri, in 1895 and at Sedalia High School, Missouri (1896 to 1898). In 1899, he graduated from the Washington University Law School, was admitted to the bar, and opened a law office in St. Louis, Missouri. He served as chairman of the board of election commissioners for the City of St. Louis (1917 to 1918). On April 30, 1918, he was appointed as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William J. Stone, serving until November 5, 1918. An unsuccessful candidate for the nomination, he resumed his legal practice and was president of the Missouri Bar Association in 1925.
