Civil War Confederate Army Officer, US Congressman, Georgia Governor. During the Civil War he served as a Colonel and commander of the 34th Georgia Infantry regiment, and lost an eye at the September 1864 Battle of Jonesboro. He was a member of the Georgia State legislature, then the Georgia State Senate. He was elected as a Democrat to represent Georgia's 9th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1883 to 1891. He served as Secretary of the state of Georgia before being elected as the Governor of Georgia from 1898 to 1902. He was the State of Georgia Historian from 1903 until his death. Candler County is named for him.
