Research shows the death of Alanson Walker "Lance" Nightingill occurred on February 12, 1870, information gathered from:
The Carson Daily Appeal(Carson City, Nevada) -Thu, Nov 18, 1869 Page 2
MARRIED, In Carson City, Wednesday night, Nov. 17, 1869, by the
Rev. Geo. B. Allen, Mr. Alanson W. Nightingill to Miss Lillias Meder.
No Cards. May the wide world get broader when it is not broad enough for this couple to be happy.
Marysville Daily Appeal, Volume XXl, number 41, 18 February 1870
The editor of the Carson Appeal, H. R. Migbels, gives the following biographical sketch of A. W. Nightingill, deceased: The good friend and esteemed citizen whose name appears above is dead. He died between the hours of 10 and 11 o'clock on the night of Saturday last, the 12th inst.
( This last article is quit long so I did not copy all of it, I just wanted it to show that this death date, 2-12-1870 and the marriage date of 11-17-1869, would make the headstone death date of 2-10-1868 as incorrect and also would be impossible )

He did hang around Marysville for a few years, according to the book, "History of Yuba and Sutter Counties by Peter J Delay, Lance was made Marysville City Marshall the years of 1856-1857.
In the 1860's Lance headed to Carson City, Nevada serving as the first State Controller once Nevada was made a state. DEATH of AN OLD CITIZEN. —A telegram was received in this city on Sunday morning, from Carson City, stating that A. W. Nightingill died on Saturday night, February 12th, and that the body would be brought to this city for burial. "Lance" Nightingill was well known and much respected both in California and Nevada, where he has been honored with office, being a pioneer of both States. He was Marshal of this city at an early day, as well as Chief Engineer of the Fire Department. Subsequently removing to Nevada - the deceased was elected Sheriff of Ormsby County, and afterwards Controller of State. The deceased by his warm-heartedness and benevolence won many ardent friends in both States, and his early demise in the prime of life calls forth the warmest sympathy. The body will arrive to-day in charge of Marshal Nightingill, his brother, and the funeral services will take place tomorrow. The deceased was a native of Findlay, Ohio, and aged about 42 years.
