U.S. Congressman. Educated at the University of Punjab, India, in 1919, he came to the United States in 1920 and graduated with M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California in 1922. He was a distributor of chemical fertilizer and a lettuce farmer in the Imperial Valley of California (1930 to 1953). He also helped organize the India Association of America in 1942, was its president, and became a U.S. citizen in 1949. He was elected judge of the Justice Court, Westmoreland Judicial District, Imperial County, California (1952 to 1957). In 1957, he was elected as a Democrat, the first Sikh, Indian American, and Asian American, to the Eighty-fifth Congress and to the next two succeeding Congresses, serving until 1963. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he retired from politics and later died from a stroke at age 73.
