U.S. Congressman. He gained recognition as an American politician as well as a successful businessman. Immigrating to the United States in 1889, he settled in Jordan, Minnesota and engaged in agricultural pursuits in 1903. All of his education was in Germany. Starting a political career, he was member of the board of aldermen of Jordan from 1905 to 1913, served on the board of education from 1913 to 1919 and had Jordan Co-operative Creamery as well as one of the organizers of Land O' Lakes Creamery in 1920. In addition, he was vice president of the Jordan board of directors from 1927 to 1933, a member of the Minnesota State House of Representatives from 1919 to 1923, served in the Minnesota State Senate from 1923 to 1929 and was the 26th Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota from 1929 to 1931. In 1933, he was elected as a Farmer-Laborite to the Seventy-third Congress, serving until 1935. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed agricultural pursuits and retired from active business in 1944. He married and the couple had only one child, a daughter who died in 1926.
