U.S. Congressman. Moving to Texas in 1846, he attended St. Mary's College, graduated from Centre College in 1866, studied law, was admitted, and commenced to practice law in San Antonio, Texas. He was the Antonio City Attorney in 1867, U.S. Commissioner for the western district of Texas (1867 to 1869), and judge of the district criminal court for San Antonio (1870 to 1871). In addition, he was District Attorney of the twenty-fourth district (1871 to 1875) and Judge of the thirty-eighth judicial district (1876 to 1892). In 1893, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-third Congress, serving until 1895. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
