U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Brown University in 1804, he studied law at Williams College, was admitted to the bar in 1809, and commenced to practice law in Lebanon, Ohio. Moving to Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1813, he practiced law, became a member of the Minutemen of the Pennsylvania State Militia and served as an officer on General Wallace's staff. He was also a deputy U.S. Marshal (1816 to 1818), the Pennsylvania State Deputy Attorney General in 1819, and a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives in 1823. In 1826, he was elected as an Adams candidate to the Nineteenth Congress, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Patrick Farrelly, serving until 1827. In 1829, he was elected as an Anti-Jacksonian candidate to the Twenty-first Congress, serving until 1831. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he was president of the U.S. Bank of Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1837, Postmaster of Erie, Pennsylvania (1847 to 1853), and engaged in the practice of law until his death.
