HEART AILMENT FATAL TO SENATOR J. CLARENCE RIGGEN
John Clarence Riggen, a member of the state Senate from the sixth senatorial district and lifelong resident of Sullivan Co., died Sunday morning, 18 Aug 1946, at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, KS, at the age of 63 years, 8 months and 2 days.
Senator Riggen suffered from a heart ailment and had been a patient in the hospital about a month. He had been unable to attend the closing three weeks of the spring legislative session. In the 63rd General Assembly he was chairman of the committee on Insurance and Workmen's Compensation, Private Corporations, Railroads and Internal Improvements, and a member of the committees on Agriculture, Conservation, Fish and Game; Accounts and Clerical Force; Municipal Corporations; Eleemosynary and Penal Institutions; Elections, Redistricting, Military and Naval Affairs and Permanent Seat of Government; and Labor. He had been active in Republican politics in Sullivan Co. for forty years and had served in the Missouri senate four years.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. D. Riggen, he was born on a farm near Milan, 16 Dec 1882. He received his education in the rural schools of Sullivan Co., the Milan High School and the Northeast Missouri State Teachers College at Kirksville. In 1905 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Montgomery and to this union one son was born, Russell.
Senator Riggen was engaged in stock raising and for a number of years taught in the rural schools of this county. Later he went into the mercantile business and funeral service in which he was associated with his son, Russell, who has managed the business since his father's illness.
He was always an ardent worker in any cause for the betterment of the community in which he lived. He was an active member of the Methodist Church, serving for many years as Sunday-School Superintendent; and took great interest in his lodges, the Milan I.O.O.F. Lodge No 83, of which he had been a member since 1925, and of the Masonic Lodge since 1920. He was a member of the Milan Chamber of Commerce and was Secretary-Treasurer of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Co.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Riggen; his son, Russell; his mother, Mrs. S. A. D. Riggen; a sister, Mrs. N. A. Mewmaw, and a brother, A. R. Riggen.
Services were held at the Methodist Church in Milan Wed. 14 [sic] Aug, Reverand W. J. Imes conducting, assisted by Rev. John J. Johnston.
