New York State Assemblyman. Represented the 98th district in the New York State Assembly from 1992 until his death in office on July 9 2003."Jacob Edward Gunther III, of Forestburgh New York, New York State Assemblyman, died Wednesday July 9th after a short illness. He was 50 years old. The son of Jacob and Betty Gunther, he was born June 11, 1953 in Middletown, New York. Jacob attended St. Lawrence University, OCCC, and the University of California, Santa Barbara. Jake Gunther was elected to three terms as Forestburgh Town Justice. In 1992 he was elected to the New York State Assembly 98th district and served on several assembly committees including Agriculture, Environmental Conservation, Oversights and Investigations, Racing and Wagering, Property Taxation, and Tourism. In January 2001, he was appointed Vice Chairman of the State Legislative Commission on Rural Resources. He was tireless and a proud advocate for his constituents. Jake emitted a beautiful energy that he shared with everyone he came in touch with. His uplifting attitude allowed him to see life through a uniquely positive lens. Jake's lens was like a kaleidoscope. No matter what he looked at, it was different, more beautiful, and more complex than others. He was always open-minded and embraced every aspect of life in the fullest and a truly genuine way. As he would say, "Sheboygan! Choo Choo Wag-my-flagen!" His optimistic philosophy towards life and how to live it has inspired both his children and his friends. It is in this way the Gunthers care to remember their husband and father, with a vivacious appetite for life and a desire to live it to the fullest. Jacob is lovingly survived by his wife Aileen and three children Mary Alice, Jacob IV, and Caitlin. His parents, brothers William and wife Judy, LeRoy and wife Gina. In-laws Eugene and Therese Malone. Nieces and nephews Elizabeth, Sarah, Adam, Jonathan, and Andrew Gunther. Daegan, Carrie, and Cathy Miller. Declan, Delia, Aidan Ludington. Jack, Casey, Julia, Patrick, and Kevin Malone. Endearing cousins Lise, Eric, Ingrid, Aunt Barbara Miller, and numerous dear friends. Visitation will be Friday, July 11 and Saturday, July 12 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown. A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, July 13 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Orchard Street, Middletown. The Rev. Daniel Morse will officiate. Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Jacob E. Gunther III Scholarship for Environmental Studies, P.O. Box 621 Monticello, NY 12701."

Middletown
State Assembly passes bill for library vote
The state Senate passed their bill earlier this month to allow a vote on whether to expand the Middletown Thrall Library District.
Monday, the Assembly passed a bill for the same purpose, sponsored by Assemblyman Jacob Gunther and Assemblyman Howard Mills.
The vote was unanimous - 146 to 0.
Now the bipartisan-supported legislation is waiting for the signature of Gov. George Pataki.
If adopted locally, the law will equalize library rates for all residents, Mills and Gunther said.
A vote on whether to expand library services to Wallkill residents living in the Pine Bush, Minisink Valley and Valley Central school districts is scheduled for April 24.
