Death: July 23, 1995 at Mason City, Iowa (Cerro Gordo County)
Elgin G. Enabnit, 93, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, July 23, 1995, at Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 27, at 1 p.m., at the United Church of Christ in Osage. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today (Wednesday), July 26, at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with Masonic Rites by the Osage Lodge at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the church at Osage.
Elgin G. Enabnit was born Sept. 16, 1901, at Mingo, Iowa, the son of Fred and Katherine Enabnit. He was married to Clarice Rose Tank of Mason City in December, 1922, and lived in Mason City, Marble Rock, Osage and Clear Lake in Iowa and Lewiston and Milville in Minnesota. Clarice died in June, 1967. Elgin married Vera J. Lang of Clear Lake in November of 1968. Vera died in January, 1994.
Mr. Enabnit farmed and was in business in Minnesota, moving to Osage in 1944 where he operated an oil company and automobile dealeership before becoming Mayor of Osage. He was Mayor for 26 years beginning in 1956. He was instrumental in making many city improvements during this tenure. Most noteworthy are the four-lane tree-lined mains treet and obtaining the municipal franchise to go along with the municipal electric utility giving the city the lowest utility rates in the state.
He was instrumental in forming the North Iowa Council of Governments and served as its first president. He helped organize the North Iowa Crime Commission and served on its board and also as its president. Elgin served as president of the Osage Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Mitchell County Cancer Society for five years and was first president of the Mitchell County Historical Society. He was also president of the Osage Development Corporation and was Mitchell County's Civil Defense Director for 10 years. He is a charter member of the Osage Rotary Club and its past president and was also named a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. Mr. Enabnit served as Sunday School teacher and Superintendent and was a member of the Board of Trustees and served as moderator for 17 years of the Osage United Church of Christ. He also served three years as President of the Congregational Laymen of Iowa and three years on the Board of Directors of the United Church of Christ of Iowa and was State Moderator.
He served as Master of the Osage Masonic Lodge and was Commander of the Commandery and was past president of the North Iowa Shrine Club and the North Iowa Consistery. He also was a past Noble Grand of the Osage Odd Fellows Lodge. He was a member of the Boy Scouts for over 50 years and was president for three years of the Winnebago Council. He won the highest award for volunteer workers in the Boy Scouts, the Silver Beaver.
Survivors include five children, Elgin (Jr.) Enabnit, and his wife, Phyllis of Weston, Connecticut., Ted Enabnit, Mason City, Jerry Enabnit, San Antonio, Texas, Betty Burling, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Shirley McGhan and her husband, Donald, Las Vegas, Nevada; one step-son, Ron W. Lang and his wife, Carolyn, Lincoln, Neb.; 17 grandchildren; two step- grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; a daughter; a son; a son-in-law; and a daughter-in-law and his wife, Carolyn, Lincoln, Neb.; 17 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
