US Congressman. He was born one of ten children (he also had six sisters and three brothers) in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, to Henry Charles Thacher and Martha Bray Thacher, and he attended and was educated in local common public schools before graduating from Adams College in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1882, and Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1884. While at Harvard University he also was a star football player having played four years of varsity football. Following his education, he relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, and he became involved in the wool business. On January 16, 1890, he married Maria Lewis Leavitt and the couple would have three children (Dorothy was born in 1892, Louise Hope was born in 1894, and Thomas Chandler Thacher Jr. was born 1896). He then served on several local organizations including as the President of the Barnstable County, Massachusetts, Agricultural Society, President of the Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Pilgrim Memorial Association, Chairman of the Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, Port Planning Board, and as Chairman of the Provincetown, Massachusetts, Tercentenary Commission in 1920. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A Democrat, he then served Massachusetts's 16th District (Sixty-Third Congresses) in the United States House of Representatives from 1913 to 1915. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1914. After his term in the United States Congress expired he was succeeded in office by United States Representative Joseph Walsh. Following his retirement from public service, he returned to his former wool business pursuits and worked as a writer on business topics. He passed away in Boston, Massachusetts, at the age of 86. His funeral was held at the Yarmouth Port Congregational Church in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, and he was buried in the Woodside Cemetery in that city next to his wife Maria who had passed away in 1933.
