RUDY ANSELMI

Funeral mass for Rudolph “Rudy” Anselmi was Thursday at the our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. A parish rosary was Wednesday followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary.

Interment was in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Joseph Melinkovich, William C. Shuster, Jack M. Smith, Gary Melinkovich, Kris Kirk and Andy Kirk.

Honorary bearers were all his friends.

Anselmi, 85, Cheyenne, died at 5 a.m. Sunday, June 11, 1989 at the DePaul Hospital in Cheyenne from an illness of six months.

Anselmi was born in Rock Springs May 1, 1904, the oldest son of Joseph and Maria Menghini Anselmi. He was the top male graduate of the Rock Springs High School, class of 1921, receiving an honor scholarship to the University of Wyoming from which he graduated with honors in 1925 with a bachelor’s degree in business.

Anselmi was the first state president of the Young Democrats. He was a Sweetwater County Democratic member of the Wyoming State Senate, serving from January 1937 until the end of 1964, when he lost his seat through reapportionment of the state Legislature. He was instrumental in obtaining legislation for the University of Wyoming building program, helped establish the college of nursing at UW and introduced legislation which was the foundation of the WICHE program of cooperative education among several western states. He and his wife established a continuing scholarship for an outstanding student in the college of nursing and the college of commerce.

For 32 years Anselmi was a member of the Rock Springs school board, serving as chairman for 15 years. He was instrumental in helping to establish Western Wyoming College. In 1965 the Wyoming School Board Association presented him their first School Bell Award. In 1976 he was awarded a certificate of commendation by the Rock Springs school board for significant contributions to the advancement of education.

In 1965 Anselmi was appointed to the state board of equalization by Gov. Cliff Hansen, being reappointed in 1971 by Gov. Stan Hathaway. The full-time board was eliminated in 1973 and from then until 1975, he was on the board of directors of Cheyenne Federal Savings and Loan (now Rocky Mountain Federal). During the 1975 legislative session, he was administrative assistant to Gov. Ed Herschler. In 1975 he was reappointed to the state board of equalization and reappointed in 1981, serving until the end of this term in 1987, when he retired from public office.

He received several awards and recognition from the University of Wyoming. In 1961 he was honored as a distinguished alumni of the college of commerce and industry. He received an honorary doctor of law degree in 1971. In 1979 he was awarded a special pin from the school of nursing and in 1983 was the recipient of a distinguished alumni award. In 1978 he was presented a silver pearl-handled dagger by the Very Rev. Lukas Kotzakis of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. In 1980 he received the National Governors’ Association award for distinguished service to the state government. During the legislative session of 1987 he was honored by the Wyoming State Senate for his contributions.

In April 1987, he was honored with a retirement dinner in Cheyenne, and on May 1, 1987, with a retirement dinner in Rock Springs given by the Sweetwater County Democratic Party.

Anselmi, listed in “Who’s Who in the West,” was a 50-year plus member of the Lions Club, Eagles, Elks, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Chi fraternity which he helped organize at UW, and the UW Alumni Association. He belonged to the Sweetwater County Fair Board and was a former chairman, being a member of the board instrumental in establishing a county fair for Sweetwater County. He was a member of the Tyrolean Trentini of Wyoming, Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Rock Springs and St. Mary’s Cathedral in Cheyenne where he had served on the parish and vocational councils. He was a fourth degree member and former grand knight of the Knights of Columbus.

From 1932 until 1965, Anselmi was manager of the Miners Mercantile Company, a department store in Rock Springs. Since 1935, he served as director of the North Side State Bank, and was secretary-treasurer of Huntley Construction Co. and HMA Realty.

On July 10, 1929, Anselmi married the former Louise Shuster of Rock Springs. She preceded him in death in November 1984.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, MaryLou and John Unguren of Rock Springs, Lynn and Tom Lockhart of Portland, Ore., and Jeri and Cliff Kirk of Gillette; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; his sisters, Mrs. Freeman (Lena) Huntley and Mrs. Joseph (Emma) Melinkovich, of Rock Springs and Mrs. T. Preston (Faye) Walters of Walnut Creek, Calif.; his brothers, James Anselmi of Cheyenne and Ernest Anselmi of Milwaukee, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Josephine, and on April 17, 1989, his grandson, Rudy Unguren.
