Detroit Mayor. He gained recognition as a 19th-century American politician. He served as the Mayor of Detroit, Michigan, in 1834 during the cholera epidemic. He served as a Candidate for Governor of Michigan in 1837. While in New York, he became involved in political matters early such as serving as the clerk to the justice of the peace and the mayor as well as a deputy to the US Marshall. At the age 18 years old, he was one of the first businessmen who emigrated to what was then the Michigan Territory. He studied law, helped with the 1820 Federal Census, and participated in exploring the frontier of Michigan. As an ethnographer, he studied Native American culture, learn the languages, and helped negotiate a treaty between the US government and the Winnebago and Menominee peoples in 1821. From 1821 to 1835, he was the Regent of the University of Michigan. In 1844, he became president of the Michigan State Bank and involved with real estate and railroads. He was the founder of Michigan Historical Society, and his historical home in Detroit is still standing in the 21st century. He married and had ten children.
