From the Chehalis Bee Nugget:
George Fremont Bickford died Saturday morning in Chehalis, following an illness of four years. the immediate cause of death was pneumonia, following a sudden cold. He was 33 years of age and was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs A F Bickford, pioneer residents of this city, and grew up in Tacoma and locally, where he graduated from the Chehalis high school. Following his graduation he was employed for some time as clerk in the post office here, when he conceived the idea that he would like to enter the United States consular service. An appointment as student interpreter for the American legation in China was secured and about 13 years ago George went to that country. His rise was rapid and it was not long until he was a deputy consul and some time prior to his suffering a nervous breakdown more than four years ago he held a post as consul. During the war his work was very arduous and broken health compelled him to return to the family home of his parents here. During his residence in China he married and brought his bride to this country on his wedding trip. His widow, a young daughter, Elinor Edith, and a son, Harold Fremont, live at Newchwang, China, with Mrs. Bickfords parents. During the past four years he had been from his post on leave of absence.
In addition to his parents, his widow and children, the deceased is survived by 5 sisters and 1 brother, as follows: Mrs Frank Bunn of Inglewood, Calif, Mrs Harry Plass of LaGrande Or, Mrs Ronald Rawlinson of Changsha, China, Mrs Frederick Ripper of Gardena, CA, Miss Edith Bickford of Chehalis, and Ralph Bickford of Chehalis.
The parents received a telegram from Secretary of State Chas. Evens Hughes, as follows: "Department expresses its sincere sympathy for you in death of your son, Consul George Bickford." Deceased expected his wife and children to arrive in Chehalis for a visit the latter part of August.
